  3. Graduate Scholarship and Award • McAdie Prize: Gurpaul Kochhar (Mosey) • 1960’s Graduate Scholarship: Jessamyn Little (Steven Brown)

  4. Victor Snieckus is awarded the 2011 Queen's Prize for Excellence in Research (7th in 14 years for Chemistry; 50% of the science total) Victor is an eminent and internationally recognized organic chemist whose research has an exceptional impact on the fields of organic and organometallic chemistry.  http://www.snieckusinnovations.ca/

  5. Dr. Philip Jessop presents a lecture to MP's and Senators in Ottawa ‘Green chemisty’ can save money and benefit environment, MPs told (Ottawa Citizen, Oct. 4, 2011) Philip was also highlighted on Discovery Channel's Daily Planet on Thursday, Feb. 10. The science program demonstrated how Philip’s "switchable" solvents work. The show aired from 7-8 pm and again at 11 pm on the Discovery Channel.

  6. Gregory Jerkiewicz is part of the “Strategic Network in Low-Pt PEMFC Research" funded by the Automotive Partnership Canada “Strategic Network in Low-Pt PEMFC Research” has been approved ($5,000,000 over five years ) by the Automotive Partnership Canada. As a member of the team, Gregory will study (i) the original of the electrocatalytic activity of Pt, (ii) stability of Pt-based materials in PEMFC and (iii)design and test low-Pt electrocatalysts.

  7. Professor David Zechel and colleagues are featured in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, USA David, along with visiting professor Bjarne Hove-Jensen and Ph.D. student Fern R. McSorely, were featured in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, USA (PNAS2011, 108, 11393-11398). The group has characterized a protein complex which is involved in the catabolism of phosphonic acids.

  8. Dr. Suning Wang Associate Editor for RSC Advances Suning has been appointed the Associate Editor dealing with inorganic and materials chemistry manuscripts.

  9. Philip Jessop's green solvent technology to be used by Switchable Solutions Inc. • Jun/ 13: Grand opening of Switchable Solutions Inc., a Mississauga company created to commercialize • Philip's patented "switchable-hydrophilicity solvents“ (http://www.switchablesolutions.com/). • Aug 2: Philip presented the keynote lecture for green chemistry at the World Chemistry Leadership • Meeting, IUPAC, in Puerto Rico.  • Sept 16-18: The Sustainable Chemistry Summit was held in Kingston, organized by GreenCentre • Canada.  190 delegates presented and learned about the commercialization of green technologies.

  10. Dr. Guojun Liu is the 2011 recipient of the Captain Alfred E. Hunt Memorial Award The Captain Alfred E. Hunt medal is awarded to the Society of Tribologist and Lubrication Engineers member authoring the best paper published during the proceeding year in a Society publication. The award is being presented for Guojun's paper titled "Friction Reduction of Lubricant base Oil by Micelles and Crosslinked Micelles of Block Copolymers".

  11. Dr. Cathy Crudden is awarded the 2011 Clara Benson Award Cathy is the recipient of the 2011 Clara Benson Award, which is presented annually to a woman who has made distinguished contributions to chemistry while working in Canada. Cathy is also Vice-President of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) and President-Elect for 2012.

  12. Gang Wu's work highlighted as "News of the Week" in C&EN Gang and his team were profiled in an article published in the latest issue of the Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN, January 3, 2011) for their groundbreaking work on 17O NMR spectroscopy of protein complexes. They have developed a method that makes it more practical to obtain solution NMR spectra of 17O in biomolecules with much better resolution than was possible before. Gang also won an NSERC Accelerator Grant during the recent Discovery Grant competition; one of only four awarded to chemists and the 3rd won by Queen’s chemists in the past four years.

  13. The Photonic Guitar (Peter Loock) • A new ultra-low noise fiber-optic sensor for vibration is a superior guitar pickup • Has been featured on the Discovery Channel, and in guitar, laser magazines. • Has been endorsed by Paul Langlois (The Tragically Hip) and other musicians. • Rivals existing piezoelectric pick-ups in quality of sound and robustness and will surpass them in terms of versatility of tone. • Also forms the base for a new generation of fiber-optic chemical sensors. • The photonic guitar is on exhibit at the Canada Science and Technology Museum from Oct 20th, 2011 to April 2012. • For more information: contact Peter Loock, hploock@chem.queensu.ca
