  5. Qualitative/quantitative debate • Debate statement • Psychology is a science and must therefore achieve its goal of predicting and controlling human behavior. This can only be achieved if nomothetic quantitative data is the foundation of theories relating to the mind and human behavior.

Debate topics • For each team ‘for and against’ a presentation must be prepared . • You will use a from of presentation called ‘PechaKucha” – means chit- chat in Japanese. • You are allowed 6 slides timed for 20 seconds each. • Significantly minimal use of images and words in the slide is crucial- your delivery is far more important. • The for presentation will be made followed by the against. • Three minutes will be allowed for questions form the teams. • Once all presentations have been made open debate will take place. • Ready to debate on Monday 17.

Questions • Using Crane 346 identify the type(s) of generalizations which can be made from a case study. • In your pair identify two qualitative studies which you have examined in IB Psychology. • Answer the question from the syllabus- ‘to what extent can findings be generalized from qualitative studies?’ Use explicit evidence from these studies to justify your answer.

  13. Ethical use of animals in psychological research….. • When it is unethical to use humans but by using animals the good outweighs the bad. • When you avoid or minimize stress. • Use as few animals as possible • Do not cause irreversible harm.

Exercise • Refer to studies we’ve addressed in class so far (if you need to watch videos in the next slide) • Brainstorm a list of activities/procedures in the experiment which were unethical. • Consider the date of the experiment and identify how the year may have influenced the procedure(s) or the research topic. • Did good outcomes of the research outweigh the ethical transgressions?
