A New Capital City - Jerusalem. After Ishbaal’s (a.k.a. - Ishbosheth ) death, David becomes king over all of Israel. David’s first act as king of Israel was to capture the city of Jerusalem from the Jebusites and make it his capital.

  1. A New Capital City - Jerusalem • After Ishbaal’s (a.k.a. - Ishbosheth) death, David becomes king over all of Israel. • David’s first act as king of Israel was to capture the city of Jerusalem from the Jebusites and make it his capital. • David chose Jerusalem because it was a “neutral site.” The city was situated right on the boundary between the Northern and Southern tribes. This way David elevated his throne above all tribal factions and avoided any jealousy or conflict.

Bringing the Ark to Jerusalem • After capturing Jerusalem, Hiram (king of Tyre) sent Phoenician craftsmen to build David a cedar palace. • After establishing himself, David wanted to bring the Ark to Jerusalem • Why? • David wanted to make Jerusalem more than a political center of Israel. He wanted it to be the religious center as well.

Bringing the Ark to Jerusalem • Bringing the Ark to Jerusalem was no easy task • He tried bringing it on a cart, but after a man named Uzzah died after touching the Ark David decided to wait and transport it properly • After three months of preparations, David had Levite priests transport the Ark into the city of Jerusalem in a huge procession. • David lead this procession dressed as a priest “leaping and dancing before the LORD.” • This disgusted his wife Michal (Saul’s daughter)

  5. Bringing the Ark • Why was David allowed to dress as a priest and offer sacrifices when Saul had been punished for it? • David made the sacrifices out of love for God

Davidic Covenant • David wanted to build a temple for the Ark of the Covenant • However, Nathan had a dream where God instructed him to tell David that it is not David who will build the temple, but his heir (Solomon) • In this same dream, God told Nathan everything that He will give to David’s descendants (2 Sam 7: 11-16). • These promises were: • 1. Dynasty – David’s descendants will continue to rule. • 2. Kingdom – David’s son will rule a kingdom. • 3. David’s son will build a temple. • 4. David’s son will be God’s own son. • 5. God will never disown David’s line. • 6. The dynasty of David will never end.

  7. Davidic Covenant • Before looking at the primary features of the Covenant, what is the Role, Form, and Sign of the Davidic Covenant? • Role: King • Form: Kingdom • Sign: Throne

  8. Davidic Covenant • Seven Primary features: • 1. David’s line will have a kingdom. • 2. The covenant is made with David’s whole dynasty. • 3. David’s son will be adopted as God’s own son. • 4. The covenant is unlimited in time and space. • 5. Jerusalem becomes the spiritual center of the world. • 6. The Temple will be a building where all the people of the earth can come to worship God. • 7. Wisdom is the new law. • Psalm 89 reflects over half of these terms of the covenant.

David’s Sin • David saw a woman named Bathsheba bathing and he wanted to have her as his own (2 Sam 11). • She was the wife of Uriah the Hittite, a soldier in King David’s army • David got her pregnant and wanted to hide his sin, so he summoned her husband and told him to sleep with her. • However, Uriah refused because warriors abstained from sex • David then decided to put Uriah on the front lines so he would die in battle and Bathsheba could be his wife

David’s Sin • David’s actions displeased God and God sent Nathan to chastise David. • Nathan told a parable to David and then applied it to his sin (2 Sam 12) • There were three punishments given to David for his sin • 1. “sword shall never depart from your house” • We will see how this happens in the next slide • 2. “I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you” • This is fulfilled in 2 Sam 16 • 3. “the son born to you will die” • Which it did shortly after it was born

Absalom • The punishment that “the sword shall never depart from your house” is realized when David’s son Absalom rebels against him. • This rebellion plunged the kingdom into civil war for a period of time. • Absalom eventually died in battle when his hair got caught on a tree branch and Joab (David’s nephew and commander of the army) put three spears in him

  12. A New King • King David was on his deathbed and his oldest son Adonijah was ready to become the next king • However, David’s wife Bathsheba and Nathan the prophet convinced David to name Bathsheba’s son Solomon as the next king. • David then died and Solomon became the third king of the United Monarchy.
