COURSE ATTENDANCE… Because of the “Leadership Development" focus with IMPACT coupled with ELC 701: The Superintendency course consists of three (3) weekend sessions. Due to the concentrated and intense nature of these courses, it is imperative that students attend all classes as one missed class constitutes a thirty-three percent loss of class time. Any missed class could put a student at risk of receiving an “Incomplete” or unsatisfactory grade for the course(s) as the academic depth of class presentations and discussions are difficult to recreate. However, in the event of an unavoidable absence and to maintain the integrity of the course, students will be expected to make-up all work as well as complete a research paper assigned by the instructor(s) on a topic pertinent to the missed class and one that will add to your growth as a graduate student.

“Here’s to the crazy one, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes…the ones who see things differently – they’re not fond of rules…You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things…they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” ~ Steve Jobs Course expectations… Influence

SATURDAY, 18, 2012 #1 Most authorities agree that organizational vision is a reflection of a preferred future to which one becomes committed, and suggest one role of leadership is to clearly define that future. It clearly is an articulation on one’s values and beliefs in education, it allows the superintendent to use existing structures of the district that are productive and positive, plan needed changes, develop strategies for achieving the changes, and to focus priorities on what is significant. However, without knowledge and data, vision can quickly digress into nothing more than hallucination. As superintendent, you will be asked to discuss your vision for the various components and constituents that comprise the district, as well as for a vision of the total district. Analyze vision statements from three to five districts and then draft your own vision using the rubric provided on Blackboard. Assignment #1 - District Vision Project (Rubric Provided) 15% September 23
SATURDAY, 18, 2012 # 2 Each student shall arrange to attend at least one f2f School Board Meeting. Students will provide a doctoral student level written report of board visit(s) using the rubric. Assignment #2 - Board Meeting Visits and Analysis Project (Rubric Provided) 15% October 28
SATURDAY, 18, 2012 # 3 The purpose of this assignment is to help you gain a more detailed “inside” perspective of the superintendency and/or senior level district administrative position There are five parts to the project-based assignment: (1) work together with classmates to identify questions based on the ISLLC, AASA & NC School Superintendent Standards, (2) each student will summarize the responses of the superintendent and/or senior level district administrator he/she interviews for assigned group, (3) each student makes personal comments for assigned group in reflection to the interview responses, (4) each assigned group will present findings about the nature of the position(s) to the class via a Web 2.0 Presentation, (5) each student will provide feedback on Web 2.0 presentation. The student will examine school and district handbooks, policies, and procedures prior to interview. Time will be provided during class to work on this assignment. Assignment #3 - Superintendent/High Ranking District Level Administrator Interview (Web 2.0 Presentation ) 20% Nov. 28
SATURDAY, 18, 2012 # 4 Assignment #4 - Reflective Exercise 25% Dec. 10 Students will write a well organized and coherent paper in response to the six questions on the course syllabus. • Please show each question in the text of your paper so that it will be clear which question you are writing about. • Your paper should be unabashedly candid and direct, and even self-promoting. Be certain that you support your response to the questions with careful and clear explanations for your response. • Review the materials provided on blackboard and the wiki, including all articles and other required readings, and review the notes you have made from the class. The purpose of this exercise is to cause you to carefully reflect on the entire class/courseexperience and to project your reflections onto your professional future. • The most important information you should consider as you produce the paper is what you know about the superintendency/district leadership and how you would project yourself in the role or in another senior level leadership position.
SATURDAY, 18, 2012 Assignments Assignment #5 - Class Participation and Professionalism (online and F2F) 25% Ongoing – Dec. 10 # 5 Class Participation: Given the constructivist design of the class, this course will be interactive. It is my expectation that all students will: participate fully for all activities and assignments in order to maximize their learning experience. participate fully in online blackboard discussions come to class prepared to lead and/or enter into discussions, to ask relevant questions, and to share the results of their study and reflection. (1) be conscious of the class schedule and the requirements for each class (knowing what to be prepared for), (2) self-disciplined (spending time to be fully prepared), and (3) eager to share with your classmates (participating actively by sharing what you have prepared both online and F2F).
