WAITANGI DAY. Hone Heke was the first chief to sign the Treaty. The treaty of W aitangi was signed around N.Z. The treaty was signed at W aitangi in the Bay of Islands. The first Waitangi Day was in 1840 but was first celebrated in 1934.

The first Waitangi Day was in 1840 but was first celebrated in 1934
About 40 chiefs signed it on the 6th of February 1840. By the end of the year another 500 chiefs had signed it by the GovenorHobson. Hone Heke was the first chief to sign the treaty
