1. James Humphrey Period A-B 8/30/13 Schooley Nathaniel Hawthorne Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on July 4, 1804. Hawthorne was a son of a ships captain who died at sea of yellow fever in 1808. His mother then brought Nathaniel and her two daughters to live with her own family, the Mannings.His mother became very protective of him. Books freed Hawthorne’s imagination. From 1816 to 1819 he lived with his mother and sisters at lakeside wilderness of Raymond, Maine. Hawthorne was a student at Bowdoin College, he graduated in the middle of his class of 38. Hawthorne went to college from 1821 to 1825. Hawthorne decided that he was going to pursue his dreams and be an author. In 1828 Hawthorne published his first Novel, Fanshawne, everybody ignored it. In October and November, Hawthorne published two short stories under his original name, Nathaniel Hathorne. From there on, he uses the name "Hawthorne“, both personally and professionally(1830). Editors were excited for his stories and one offered hackwork. In 1836, with the support of his sister Elizabeth, Hawthorne edited The American Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge and wrote a best-selling children’s story,Peter Parley’s Universal History. In 1837, Hawthorne’s “12 lonely years” ended when he published a short story, “Twice Told Tails” with his name on the cover.On July 9th, 1842 Hawthorne marries Sophia Peabody, a painter. They end up having two kids together, a girl Una and a son Julian. In April, 1846, Hawthorne became Surveyor of the Salem Custom House and returned to where he was born. That June, Mosses from an Old Manse was published. Later on in his career he’s written 4 novels, The Scarlet Letter(1850), The House of Seven Gables(1851), The Blithedale Romance(1852), and The Marble Faun: Or, The Romance of Monte Beni(1860). Hawthorne’s most famous novel was The Scarlet Letter. After this novel was out it was an instant seller. Www.dosomething.org says, “The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is an inevitable read for most high school English classes. Besides being a good book to cite on the SAT writing section, the book has some pretty socially responsible themes.” Sadly, Nathaniel Hawthorne died Plymouth, New Hampshire, while on vacation with a friend and past president Franklin Pierce. He was buried on Author's Ridge at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord.
