  8. External exams: Module 2English GCSE • Focus on writing • Worth 30% of total mark/ grade • Students have to write 2 non-fiction texts • Spelling, punctuation and sentence organisation are worth 1/3 of the total marks available on this paper

  9. Literature Texts and Controlled Assessments for GCSE English Literature

  10. External exams: Module 1 ENGLISH LITERATURE GCSE • Focus on reading • Worth 35% of total mark/ grade • Students have to read one extract on Of Mice and Men and answer two questions; also, students must read and interpret two UNSEEN poems and compare and contrast them

  11. External exams: Module 2ENGLISH LITERATURE GCSE • Focus on reading • Worth 40% of total mark/ grade • Students have to read one extract on Lord of the Flies and answer two questions; also, students have to read one extract on Blood Brothers and answer two questions

  12. External exams: Module 1 FUNCTIONAL SKILLS LEVEL 2 • Focus on reading • Worth 40% of total mark/ grade • Students answer a series of questions, which require different lengths of responses, on texts that will be either instructional, explanatory or persuasive in purpose

  13. External exams: Module 2 FUNCTIONAL SKILLS LEVEL 2 • Focus on writing • Worth 40% of total mark/ grade • Students have to write 2 non-fiction texts – typically one informative and one persuasive • Spelling, punctuation and sentence organisation are assessed

  14. Internal exams: Speaking and Listening FUNCTIONAL SKILLS LEVEL 2 • Worth 20% of total mark/ grade • Controlled assessments assessing talk in groups and one presentation – one in the Autumn term and one in the Spring term. • Students will receive notice of these.

How to help your child • Keep an eye on the Programme of Study for the year then you know what your child is studying • Ensure that your child completes English homework on time and to the highest standard he or she can • Talk to your child about what they are studying in English and ask if you can support and/ or help them • When we are focusing on exam preparation in school, revisit the work from lessons with your child and help them to review their learning

  17. Lorna’s Day Lorna needed to buy a birthday present so she decided to go on a shopping spree on Saturday afternoon. She went to Top Shop to buy a t-shirt for her friend. She then went to WHSmith to buy some ribbon and wrapping paper. She then went home and wrapped the gift. It looked so pretty in the golden paper and red bow. Lorna had thought about going out with her mates for the evening but was too tired so she stayed at home and watched ‘Strictly come Dancing’.   20. Separate Sciences 3 exams in Biology 3 exams in Chemistry 3 exams in Physics All in May/June, 2014 Each written exam is worth 25% of a GCSE. All students must also complete at least 1 controlled assessment in each subject worth another 25%.

  24. How can parents help? Revision guides and workbooks can be purchased from the science department (cheaper than in the shops!). These are useful throughout the course. Booklets of some past-papers can be purchased from the science department, or all past-papers can be accessed through the AQA website (www.aqa.org.uk) Encourage your child to attend the revision sessions at lunch-time and after-school from Easter onwards Help your child learn the ‘command words’ which are used in the exams Ensure all homework is completed

  31. Tips for Revising Maths Before you start revising, get all your notes sorted, and draw up a list of all the topics you need to cover.LEARN the FORMULAE you need. Plan exactly when you are going to revise, and be strict with yourself. 3. Give yourself little treats and things to look forward to. 4. Don’t just read through the textbook or your notes! Don’t just practice the topics you can do.

  32. Make sure you ask for help if you get stuck. Practice doing questions under exam conditions. Practice using your calculator! Show your working out – the more marks there are for a question, the more working out they expect to see. Use the marks as a guide to how long to spend on each question.
