Empowering Non-Traditional Students: The Role of NTSA at UTM

The Non-Traditional Student Association (NTSA) at UTM was revitalized in 2009 to support students aged 23 and older, recognizing their unique challenges compared to traditional students. With many juggling family, jobs, and other responsibilities, NTSA aims to provide a supportive community and resources to enhance their academic experience. Members can connect, advocate for their needs, and find a sense of belonging among peers who understand their struggles. Join NTSA to have a voice, access essential programs, and foster connections with like-minded individuals.

  2. What is the NTSA? • This organization has existed in some form since 1987. It has been active on and off since then, and 2003 was the last time it was active. It operated under the name Older Student Association.

  3. Why Now? • A group of Section 45 freshman noticed a need for an organization that represented the Non Traditional Student. Non Traditional students seemed to be in background and would get on and off campus as quick as possible. The NT’s needs are different the that of a traditional student.

  4. Why Not? • We all have similar struggles and responsibilities. Family, children, jobs, disabilities, a traumatic experience of some kind. • There is a need to offer all the same programs and resource offered to the traditional student in such a way it is possible for the NT to participate & be involved.

  5. What is Non Traditional Student? • The state defines a Non Traditional student as, any student of 25 years of age. • The NTSA defines a NT as, any student full time or part time who are 23 years old and/or any emancipated student (independent of parental financial support) (NTSA constitution)

  6. NTSA Purpose • The NTSA exist to Support, Advocate, Mentor, & Serve the Non Traditional Students at UTM. It is our Mission to reach every Non Traditional Student at UTM and serve as a resource to better their collegiate experience.

  7. Why Should You Join the NTSA? • You will find other students who can relate to your needs and issues. • A voice at the college, A advocate • Opportunity to belong to something geared toward your interest • You will meet other’s like yourself that you probably would not have met otherwise.
