  2. Learning Goal & Objectives The goal of this lesson is to examine the literary elements in the novel, City of the Beast. TSWBAT: understand literary terms identify and interpret examples of literary elements in the novel analyze the theme cite textual evidence to support answers

  3. Key Terms • Setting – time, place, and conditions • Foreshadowing – clues to suggest what will happen • Conflict – struggle or clash between opposing characters or forces • Internal • External • Climax - the moment of greatest suspense • Resolution – final outcome; solution to the conflict • Theme – central idea or message in a work of literature

  4. Scale of Understanding • How do you feel? • 4 – Mrs. Whiddon, I could teach this for you! • 3 – Got it! • 2 – I get it when we do it together. • 1 – I get part of it. • 0 – I just moved here from Mars .

  5. What do you think? Do you the internal conflicts or the external conflicts were most important to the plot? What role do you think the different settings play in the plot development? How does the author use foreshadowing in the book? Can you discuss how one event alludes to a future event?

  7. Your Task – Working in your groups, analyze one literary element and provide evidence from the novel to support your answer. Be patient - your task will be assigned momentarily.
