  4. Who Are We? • Small unit of NWS employees • Funded by FAA via MOU • Staff includes: • Meteorologist in Charge • Administrative Support Assistant • Five Senior Meteorologists

  5. Why Are We Here? To provide weather training, evaluation, and certification for employees of the FAA and its contractor (Lockheed Martin), who support air traffic operations throughout the United States. “Keeping pilots out of harms way”

What Do We Provide? • Residence Class Instruction – Air Traffic Basics – Tower Visibility • Written (PC – Based) and Oral Pilot Weather Briefing (PWB) Certification Exams • Computer - Based Training (CBT) Courses • Certify and Maintain Database for: Pilot Weather Briefers (850+) Tower Visibility Observers

Classroom Stats • Each student spends 10-15 weeks at the Academy • Approximately 1,180 ATB students past year (incr) • ATB class = 25 days (we teach 24 hours on Wx) • ATB going through major revision • Adding 15 laptops for students • Instructional material to be updated (including Wx) • Number of classes/year doubled • Number students/class cut in half (18)

What Topics Do We Teach/Test*? • Weather Analysis, Satellite, WSR-88D Radar (On-Line Only) • Tower Visibility • EFAS (On-Line Testing only) • Characteristics of the Atmosphere • Hazardous Weather (e.g.,Turbulence) • Current Weather (e.g., METARs) • Forecasts and Advisories (e.g., AIRMETs) * We train entry-level controllers. We do not train pilot weather briefers – Lockheed Martin and The University of Alaska do that

New Course for En Route Controllers • On-Going Collaboration Between the FAA Air Traffic Training Division and NWS FAA Academy • Plan and Outline Completed…Work on Content Underway • Application of Pertinent Weather Information to En Route ATC Decision-Making • Focus on En Route Hazards (e.g., Thunderstorms, Turbulence, Icing) • Scenarios will be Included

  11. What About PWB Evaluations? • Certify Briefers for both Lockheed-Martin (Lower 48 States) and the FAA (Alaska) • Initial Preflight Evaluation • Random/By-Request Proficiency Checks • International/En Route Flight Advisory Service (EFAS) Briefing Evaluation • On-Site Evaluation (Formal Visit)

How are PWB Evaluations Conducted? • Scheduled up to One Month Ahead of Time • 2 – 3 Per Day • On Exam Day…AFSS Supervisor/Training Officer Calls Evaluator (Reversed for Random) • Evaluator Uses OASIS System..DUATS.. and AWC’s ADDS Web Page • Briefer Uses FS-21/Oasis • Evaluator Uses PWB Scoring Sheet
