  4. What makes speaking difficult • Common reasons include • I’ve nothing worth saying • I’ve no experience • Audiences Scare me - I’m shy • I have no time to do it properly • I have an accent • I lack confidence

  6. Preparing an Effective Talk • 1. Brainstorming • 2. The ‘P’ Stage • Purpose • People • Proposition • Power Points • Profit • 3. The Presentation

  7. Brainstorming • Gather the points you think important • Review the Subject • Jogs memory • Solid Background • Helpful if required to answer questions • Better to have too much information at this time

  8. Purpose • Establish your reason for speaking • inform / entertain / persuade ? • Analyse your purpose • What reaction / action do you want • Write down your purpose • Make it clear and precise

  9. People : Who are your audience • Tailor you material to your audience • Consider their : • Technical / Social Level • Needs from your talk • Connection with your work • GET TO KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE !

  10. Power Points • From you wealth of information : • Pick out a few points and build you case upon them • Separate the facts from opinion • Use lesser facts to enhance the case or for questions later

  11. Profit : When you have finished your audience will be older Make sure they are wiser !

  12. Delivering the Goods • Voice : • Vary Pitch, Volume and pace accordingly • Distractions : • ‘in fact’, ‘erm’, ‘as a matter of fact’ • Physical distractions • ‘Personal’ distractions

  16. Opening Gambits • You never get a second chance to make a first impression ! • Three sentence approach • 1. Vivid/ Interesting/ offbeat remark • 2. Link to your subject and make clear what it is • 3. Involve your audience in your opening remark and your subject
