  4. What Is a Moon Phase? • Moon Phases - Shapes created by the changing amounts of the visible lit areas of the moon.

  5. New Moon The first phase of the lunar cycle. During this phase, the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun. Because its lighted side is facing away from Earth, the Moon appears dark.

  6. Waxing Crescent Moon The waxing crescent phase appears after the new Moon phase. As the moon continues in its orbit, more of the lighted area becomes visible. During this time, the Moon is described as waxing, or growing.

  7. First Quarter Moon . The third Moon phase. Occurs when half of the moon is visible.

  8. Waxing Gibbous Fourth Moon phase. Moon is still growing so most, but not all, of the Moon is visible.

  9. Full Moon Fifth moon phase. During this phases, the entire lighted side of the Moon is visible from Earth. At this point, the Earth is between the moon and the Sun.

  10. Waning Gibbous Sixth Moon phase. Begins right after the full Moon Phase. After the full Moon phase, the area of the lighted side that is visible from Earth begins to wane, or get smaller.

  11. Third Quarter Moon Seventh Moon Phase. May also be called last quarter moon.

  13. Why Does The Moon Have Phases? As the moon revolves, different amounts of its lighted side are visible from Earth. Note: It takes about 29 days for a complete cycle of the phases of the Moon.
