  2. Introduction: Child Abuse According to U. S. Department of Health and Human services: (Nation Wide) Every ten seconds a child abuse report is being made ■ The overall rate of child fatalities was 2.10 deaths per 100,000 children. ■ Four fifths (81.6%) of all child fatalities were younger than 4 years old. ■ Boys had a higher child fatality rate than girls at 2.47 boys per 100,000 boys in the population. Girls died of abuse and neglect at a rate of 1.77 per 100,000 girls in the population. ■ Nearly 90 percent (86.5%) of child fatalities were comprised of African American (28.2%), Hispanic (17.8%), and White (40.5%) victims. ■ Four fifths (78.3%) of child fatalities were caused by one or more parents. • Baby Briana’s death could have been prevented.

  3. What Is child abuse? Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caregiver, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm • Different types of child abuse: • Physical Abuse: Any injury or wound that is inflicted on the child with intention • Neglect: If the basic needs and requirements of a child are not being fulfilled • Verbal, psychological, and emotional Abuse: Any attitude, talk or expression that is demeaning and degrading for your child • Sexual Abuse: any act of sex between a child and an adult

  4. Visible Signs of child abuse Malnutrition Unexpected injuries such as cuts, bruises, and broken bones Lack of personal care or hygiene Shies away from touch, flinches at sudden movements, or seems afraid to go home. Injuries appear to have a pattern such as marks from a hand or belt.

  5. Behavioral Signs of child abuse Inappropriate sexual behaviors Changes school performance and attendance Risk taking behaviors Change in sleeping and eating habits Lack of trust and relationship difficulties

I am scared I am lonely Emotional and Mental signs of child abuse : I don’t ever want to go home guilt Who am I ? • Fearful • Depressed • Withdrawn • Trouble regulating emotions • feeling worthless or damaged • Lack of self esteem • Adult- like bearing sadness Cant do anything right! Flinching I am so stupid I am ugly No One loves me Why do I feel so sad angry I hate myself Want to dig a hole and never come out

  7. A. Reporting child abuse 1. Call the police 911 2. Call the national child abuse hotline 1800-42244533. For Utah you can call the hotline 1-855-323-3237. B.  Information that would be helpful when reporting 1. Who is the perpetrated the abuse? 2. What happened?3. Where did this occur? 4. When did this occur? C. Minimum criteria for abuse referral 1. Victim must be under 18 years old 2. Means of being able to identify and locate victim. 3. A specific, new occurrence of abuse, neglect, or dependency

  8. Conclusion: Children are abused daily. Every ten seconds child abuse is being reported. We can prevent child abuse. By knowing what is child abuse and how to identify child abuse we can prevent abuse by acting on it and doing something more than feeling sympathetic. The question is what are you going to do about child abuse?
