The New Michigan.gov What’s Ahead?
Advantages • New Streaming Video ServerWe will be obtaining a dedicated server for handling streaming media. We will be able to handle many videos and/or audios in house with much better responsiveness than we have been able to in the past.
Advantages • New Updated HardwareOur current hardware, with minor changes, has been in place since 2001. It is time to upgrade to new and improved hardware.
Advantages • Better Load Balancing5 Production Servers instead of 4 will result in quicker response times for our users.
Advantages • Upgraded Security & Intrusion DetectionThe security on our internet system is being upgraded to IBM’s Internet Security System (ISS) which ranks as the #1 security and vulnerability assessment software for 6 years running.
Advantages • Disaster RecoveryA new disaster recovery system is being implemented. An entire mirror of the production site is being created in another location so that in the event of a disaster, we can have the other site up and running within 48 hours.
Advantages • Better Cache ManagementNo more waiting for the cache to clear at certain times. Content will go live within 15 - 20 minutes of publication, automatically. You won’t have to worry about parts of the site going live while other parts need a manual cache clear. Everything will be automatic. Manual cache clears will still be available when 20 minutes is too long to wait.
Advantages • Smoother User ExperienceIf one area of a page changes, the whole page does not have to refresh, just that portion of the page will refresh resulting in a smoother experience for the user.
Advantages • More Intelligent Web AnalyticsWith the use of temporary tracking cookies and tagging technology, we will be able to have a better idea of client behavior on our website. This will enable departments to be more responsive to customer needs.
Advantages • Improved PersonalizationIn the future, Personalization will be able to easily extend beyond the Michigan.gov portal to all of the websites. Further down the road, the personalization will become much more robust.
Advantages • Better Support for Many Devices & PlatformsAutomatic support for multiple devices and platforms is built in to the system. That means we will no longer have to build separate pages for PDAs, cell phones, Blackberry’s and the like. Support for different browser types and platforms (PC, Mac, WebTV, etc.) will be smoother.
Training Plan • By phase • Site Admins together • Content Entry by site/department • As many people as feasible • More training after the migration is complete • Quick Guides will be available
Separation of Content & Presentation • Content and display not joined together. • When creating content – focus only on the content – not on the display. • Display is taken care of by selecting the type of authoring template and site area in combination.
More authoring templates than the current ONE Alert Page Layout Document / Asset Link Promotion Quick Link Online Service Article Press Release Policy Contact FAQ Form Definition Calendar Event Blog ePostcard Bid Photo Generic HTML Content Authoring Templates
Merging of Content & Assets • No distinction between content and assets. There will be: • Image/Photo content • Document/PDF content • Authored content
Workflow • All content will go through workflow for all departments. • All edited content will go back through workflow. • Workflow can be one-step – Author approval only. (Not a best practice) • Content with an expiration date will also have a “workflow” – it will send a reminder when the expiration date is about to come due.
In-Context Preview & Editing • Everyone must log in to see “w3”. • Editing live content cannot be previewed “in-context”.
Auto Cache Clearing • After workflow is complete, items are pushed to the public within 10 – 20 minutes. • There is no cache clear schedule. • Everything will go live – not just part of the site. • Manual cache clears will still be available.
Summary: New Way of Thinking When you are going to add a new piece of content to the web site, you usually have a mental picture of what it is going to look like. You know where a link to it is going to exist and what will happen when that link is clicked. The challenge is to make that mental picture a reality.
Summary: New Way of Thinking In the current Vignette CMA, you have learned to think the process through a certain way. In the new environment, that process is going to change. Your way of approaching the challenge is going to be different. Your way of thinking is going to have to change.
In Vignette CMA • Determine the Primary Category • Is an image, document, or other asset involved? Then you need to Add Asset • Determine if this it to be Link or HTML or other type of content • Determine how this will be ordered – can affect release date/priority • Then enter the content – select the category first then enter the other fields as appropriate. All fields visible all the time. • When done it automatically starts workflow if applicable
In IBM WCM • Determine the Authoring Template – similar to type of content – but more choices – including image/document • Enter content – everything is content – no difference between content and asset. Only the appropriate fields for each type of content will be available. Each Authoring Template will be unique. • Choose workflow – everything will now have workflow and you will be forced to assign one – usually you will only have one choice • Choose Site Area (equivalent to Primary Category) • Ordering will be handled by the Display Template. To manually order things – as in by priority – you will be able to manually order the content in a folder any way you want.
Items to Prepare • Expired Content You Want to Keep • Identify Link Content to Other MI.gov Sites • Mass Delete Unneeded Content
