  17. FILIPINO PEOPLE: A SUPERIOR RACE ?

  18. Filipinos’ Theme:Divided We Stand, United we Fall • We lack the Unity • We Suffer from Identity Crisis • We don’t think with “One Mind” • We lack commitment to “Nation Building” • The Qualities of our Character is Endangered CHARACTER

  19. FILM CLIP REAL YOU

  20. The Essence of Discipline . . . I. DISCIPLINE DELAYED GRATIFICATION

  21. DISCIPLINE • Delayed Gratificationis the commitment to schedule the pain of life first so we can really experience the pleasures of life that follow. • In every area of life, discipline begins with delayed gratification.

  22. Ask Yourself… • When have you failed to discipline yourself: • spiritually? physically? • financially? relationally? • How would you go about in disciplining yourself in these areas? • spiritually? physically? • financially? relationally? DISCIPLINE

  23. II. CONFIDENCE Acknowledge the presence of God – Given Potential

  24. DO SOMETHING ! The first step in developing confidence is proving to yourself that you have God-given abilities that are begging to be developed. In order to do this, you’re going to have to leave safety and security of the comfort zone you live in so that you can learn something new. This might mean attending/enroling for a class that stretches you intellectually to prove to yourself that your mind functions well. Maybe you need to take lessons in an area that will stretch your artistic or athletic skills. Or maybe you should become a part of a group activity or a new challenge in school or a ministry in your church. CONFIDENCE

  25. You see, people who never leave their comfort zonesdon’t grow in their confidence! You develop confidence by gritting your teeth and saying, “If I am fearfully made, and if I have all of this divine potential within me, I’m going to try something new and see what happens.” What is one God-given ability, talent, or spiritual gift that you need to develop and start using? What can you do to start developing greater levels of competency in this area of your life? CONFIDENCE

  26. Push Back When life pushes you down, push back! That's what you're here for. You're capable, you're creative, you're full of life and energy. You have what it takes to move yourself forward around any obstacle. Don't let anything stop you.

  27. Take strength from meeting the challenges, and move ahead. The struggles you face are just what you need to fulfill your potential for greatness. Think back over the past year. Consider the ways in which you've grown, the things you've learned, your accomplishments. Most of these probably came from overcoming some challenge or adversity which initially stood in your way.

  28. A year from now, when you look back at today, you'll see that the problem you're so concerned with right now, was another valuable lesson waiting to be learned. ~ Ralph Marston ~

  29. III. PATIENCE When Patience Runs Out, WATCH OUT !

  30. PATIENCE • When patience runs out, we tend to launch a verbal attack that usually wounds or hurt the other person. • Whenever we lose our patience, we lose control. We lose our perspective. • When patience wears “thin”, we say things and do things that we later regret. • When patience runs out, watch out! Someone is sure to get hurt.

  31. FILM CLIP THE SADDEST COMMERCIAL CONTENTMENT

  32. Ask Yourself… • Share an experience about a time that somebody got impatient with you. How did it feel when that person launches a verbal attack on you? How did you react/respond? • What happens to you when your patience runs out? How does others respond or react to your impatience? • What particular area in your life in which you struggle with impatience? • How is “patience” learned? What would you do to develop it? PATIENCE

  33. My brothers, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:2-3 PATIENCE

  34. Tell the person seating beside you: “Please be patient with me, God is not through with me yet.” PATIENCE

  35. IV. ENDURANCE DEVELOPING ENDURANCE

  36. Crashing through quitting points • We must commit ourselves to developing endurance in every area of our lives. • This involves establishing a pattern of always pushing ourselves a little beyond where we feel comfortable • We need to draw on God’s strength and crash through them. This is the key to learning endurance. ENDURANCE

  37. Take a look at this credentials: • Terminated from employment in 1832 • Lost bid for Legislature in that same year • Failed in Business in 1833 • Sweetheart died in 1835 • Suffered nervous breakdown in 1836 • Lost bid for Senate in 1854 • Lost nomination for Vice President in 1856 • Failed to make it again to the senate in 1858 • Elected President of United States in 1860 ENDURANCE

  38. These credentials belong to one of the Greatest Presidents in the History of the United States of America —Abraham Lincoln ENDURANCE

  39. ASK YOURSELF . . . Identify one specific area in your life in which you have a pattern of quitting. (What specific situations do you always find yourself giving in or surrendering?) What are the barriers that stand in the way of breaking through? ( What are the things that makes you “give up?) What does it take to persevere to the point of breaking through this quitting point? ( What will it take for you to persevere and not give up?)

  40. “Blessed are those who draw on God’s strength and endure through trials and crash through quitting points.” • Developing endurance is a choice that should become a lifestyle for all of us. ENDURANCE

  41. V. CONTENTMENT The MYTH of MORE

  42. Many of us still believe in the myth of more. We really think that a little more money, a little more status, a little more excitement, a little more travel, a little more pleasure, a little more power, a little more whatever, will finally produce satisfaction in our soul. But stop and reflect for a moment. Have any of your acquisitions, experiences, or accomplishments brought you significant levels of inner satisfaction? Or are you still one possession, one award, one position away from being able to say, “Enough.” The myth of more consigns us to a lifetime of discontentment and dissatisfaction. CONTENTMENT

  43. FILM CLIP NO HANDS NO WORRIES CONTENTMENT

  44. ASK YOURSELF . . . • 1)What causes this constant desire of wanting to have more? • I want more so that others would like me more • I want more so that I will be happy • I want more so that I will be secured • I want more because it gives me power • Other reasons • 2) I will only be satisfied and happy… • If I have a good education • If I have a million in the bank • If I have wonderful family and friends • If I have a stable job and income • If someone would just love me • Other reasons

  45. Today I can complain because the weather is rainy, or I can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free.Today I can feel sad that I don’t have more money, or I can be glad that my finances encourage me to plan my purchases wisely and guide me away from waste.Today I can grumble about my health or I can rejoice that I am alive.Today I can mourn my lack of friends, or I can excitedly embark upon a quest to discover new relationships.

  46. Today I can complain because I have to go to school, or eagerly open my mind and fill it with rich tidbits of knowledge.Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped. And here I am, the sculptor who gets to do the shaping. And what today will be like is up to me. “The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything”. Francis Kong “The Early Bird Catches the Worm. . .”

  47. BECOME CHARACTER DRIVEN INSTEAD OF EMOTION DRIVEN It is not doing the things we like to do, but doing the things we have to do that causes growth and make us successful. “There’s no such thing as a perfect job. In any position you’ll find duties which, if they are not difficult at that time, they eventually will be. Success depends not merely on how well you do the things you enjoy, but how conscientiously you perform duties that are not enjoyable” John Luther A

  48. Character Driven People • Do right, then feel good • Commitment Driven • Make principle-based decisions • Action controls attitude • Believe it, then see it • Create momentum • Ask: “What are my responsibilities?” • Continue when problem arise • Steady • Leaders • Emotion Driven People • Feel good, then do right • Convenience driven • Make popular-based decisions • Attitude controls action • See it, then believe it • Wait for momentum • Ask: “What are my rights?” • Quit when problems arise • Moody • Followers

  49. Good Character is more praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are, to some extent, gifts. By contrast, good character is not given to us. We have to build it piece by piece – by thought, choice, courageand determination.

  50. SUCCESS is when I add value to myself SIGNIFICANCE is when I add value to others John Maxwell
