  2. Style and silhouettes • The fashion of the early 1800’s. • 1800-1820 Was Empire waist with draping and simple white coloring or pastels inspired by Grecian design. • 1820-1840 Was the romantic era, colors and prints with more complex shaping arising in dresses. Ornamentation became popular as well. • 1840-1850 The gothic era came to. Sleeves became fitted and skirts became domed while darker colors came into fashion.

  3. Empress Josephine • Empress Josephine was the dominant fashion icon in the early 1800’s. • When napoleon had hoped to become the leading country in fashion he halted all fabric trade to England and revived the lace making industry in France and made it a rule that no woman may enter the court in the same dress more than once in hopes to promote clothing sales.

  4. Modesty • Though the styles we’re changing around constantly, one thing never did. Modesty. • Women were to cover there breasts and keep and appropriate hem line. Full grown ladies were expected to have the dress go to at least their ankles because to show leg was scandalous.

  5. fabric • Fabrics: Muslin was the most popular dress fabric early on because it was easier to clean. Especially because white soiled easily. Silk, twill, wool and cotton batiste were also common fabrics used for dresses.

  6. Colors of choice • 1800-1820 Whites and pastels were commonly used in fashion. Though whites were generally saved for night. • 1820-1840 Colors became popular. Though dull, browns and deep red were common in fashion along with brighter shades of pinks and blues and greens. • 1840-1850 With the gothic era darker tones were popular. Burgundy and hunter greens along with peacock blues became popular. Along with more sold tones or small floral pattern. A day dress from 1840
