  1. Adolescents entering the adult world in the 21st century will read and write more than at any other time in human history. They will need advanced levels of literacyto perform their jobs, run their households, act as citizens, and conduct their personal lives. They will need literacy to cope with the flood of information they will find everywhere they turn. They will need literacy to feed their imaginations so they can create the world of the future.  In a complex and sometimes even dangerous world, their ability to read will be crucial. (Moore, Bean, Birdyshaw, & Rycik, 1999, p. 3)

  6. Common Core • Upon graduation, students should be able to • Demonstrate independence • Build strong content knowledge • Comprehend and critique • Value evidence • Respond to varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline

Mission Statement • The Mission of the AHS Literacy Alliance is to Develop a Common Understanding of Literacy for AHS Staff and Students by: • Promoting rigorous literacy expectations across all content areas • Equipping students to comprehend, synthesize, and create meaning in all content areas • Advocating for student engagement with a variety of texts for multiple purposes

  8. Literacy at AHS is Reading - Engaging with “text” Constructing meaning Writing - Communicating ideas Applying “the rules” Research - Generating questions Synthesizing information

  9. When • Two year process • Literacy will become pervasive and consistent in every classroom • Faculty meetings and department meetings • Implementing literacy strategies until skills become embedded in all lessons

Statistics National Local 3 out of 10 Delaware public high school students continue for a second year in college (Albright, 2013). 2013 DCAS Reading Grade 10- 19% do not meet the standards Jeff Klein- Achievement Gap Data for AHS??? • Approximately 40 percent of high school graduates lack the literacy skills employers seek (Achieve, Inc., 2005). • Approximately 32 percent of high school graduates are not ready for college level English composition courses (ACT, 2005).

  12. How? • Department Meetings: • Learn strategies, • Time to plan for implementation; (minimum of 1 per week) • Share classroom examples. • Faculty Meetings: • Cross-curricular teams share reflections and concerns.

  13. Task • Move to area designated on your agenda • Designate a scribe • As a group, complete the graphic organizer (5 minutes)

  15. Wrap-Up Individually, on the back of your index card write something: Interesting you learned in your group discussion…. Questions to help in moving forward… Leave your graphic organizer and index card on the back tables as you exit.

Action Item • Referring to the poster, engage each period of students in discussion about what “Literacy at AHS” looks like in your classroom. • Ask them to consider • Content area • Level • Template for compiling responses will be sent via email immediately after this meeting • Bring to department meeting Monday, September 16 for collaboration/discussion
