  2. Climateprotectionis a Major challenge It doesn`t stop at borders Humans are both: the polluters of greenhouse gases and affected by global climate changing Climate protection touches many differentsectors System change is asked Climate change is the challenge ofthis century

ClimateProtectionneedshelp International agreements (Kyoto Protocol and follow-up agreements) In order to keep global warming below 2°C, a stabilization of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentration under 450 ppm CO2-equivalent would be required EU 20-20-20 targets (Climate and Energy package) Austria minus 16% of GHG-emissions until 2020 In October 2011 the Austrian National Climate Protection law was adopted

PROCESS OF THE CLIMATE PROTECTION PLAN was started with: • Research partners Wegener Center TU GrazJoanneum Research • Representatives from the Styrian federal state parliament • Representatives from the socialpartners(chamber of trade, commerce and industry, chamber of labour..) and Association of Austrian Cities, Towns and Local Authorities • a small number of internal experts

In a further step the project team has been expanded Consortium of 20 experts (Wegener Center, TU Graz, Joanneum Research) 13 interest groups  (chamber of trade, commerce and industry, chamber of labour, representatives from Styrian cities and towns ...) 34 departments from the Land of Styria with about 40 colleagues 46 non-profit and non-governmental organizations from the fields of environmental, nature, education ….

IMPLEMENTATION STAGES STAGE I („UPI“; 2011-2013) 57 measures from all 6 categories at this stage 2 annual meetings of all responsible experts (per category) First Climate Protection Report (Database 2011) • 5 measures completed, 45 on going, 7 measures in preparation process • 24 recommended procedures from the responsible experts Second Report (Database 2012) currently in preparation STAGE II („UPII“; starting 2013) Current checklist contains 115 measures including the non-completed measures from Stage I Website: www.klimaschutz.steiermark.at

EDUCATIONAL FOCUS 2011/2012 & 2012/2013„Klima schützen – Chancen nützen“ • Cooperation with Landesschulrat (Styrian board of education) • Target groups • Volksschule • Unterstufen (HS, AHS..) • Oberstufen (AHS, BHS…) • In the schoolyear 20011/12 about 12.000 pupils and 85 schools were involved • Homepage: http://www.politiks.at/ • Award Ceremony with about 300 pupils and teachers on May 16, 2012.

EDUCATIONAL FOCUS 2011/2012 & 2012/2013„Klima schützen – Chancen nützen“ Presentation of the biggest climate poster advertising in Oktober 2012 • 100 pupils painted pictures to climate topics like renewable energy, mobility, consumption,… Climate action day on 5. April 2013 • Nearly 100 schools involved
