  2. Discussion Questions 1. Are there noticeable changes in Huck and Jim’s relationship since Huck apologized to Jim in Chap 15? Find at least one example. 2. What does the feud episode add to the novel? How does the discord between the Grangerfords and the Stepherdsons parallels the play, Romeo and Juliet, with the Capulets and Montagues? (these are real people in history by the way) 3. What aspect of society is Twain satirizing through the feud episode?

  3. More Discussion 4. What do you think about Sherburn’s speech to the mob from the top of his roof? What is his view of men and do you think it is accurate? Explain. Use at least one quote. Support you answer with some modern day examples, and/or some examples from this book, or any other. 5. Where Ms. Watson represents the rigid rules of society, what aspect of society do the Duke and Dauphin characterize or represent? Why does the author include them in the story? What aspect of society might Twain be mocking here? Find at least one specific example

  4. The plan • Number off 1-5 • Gather with the others who have the same number. Get out your journals and Huck book. Label your journal entry “Huck 17-22 Discussion” • Find the corresponding number of discussion question (group 2 has question 2) • Write a short paragraph, complete with one specific quote/example addressing the question. Each person should write down the group’s paragraph; don’t simply summarize but analyze • Chose a spokesperson who will share your findings with the whole class • Have each group share their findings, while everyone takes notes on the other four questions (the fifth, your own, is already done).

We are moving on to the last section in the packet this week! • Please bring your materials to class each day. To inspire you: Without your materials don’t be caught; the material police I am not. Please don’t make my voice raise, instead, earn some praise!

  7. Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey • Much of the middle section of the novel is a series of Huck’s “tests” so please take note of these, especially chapters 30-31. In fact, please pre-write on the questions below in your journal- • What is Huck’s moral dilemma in Chapter 31 and what does he resolve to do about it and why? Find a quote or two to support your answer. Where does this fit into the hero’s journey?
