  4. Ved Vyasa • Ved Vyasa originally wrote mahabharat in sanskrit 5,000 years ago. • According to the legend, the creator, Brahma appeared in Ved Vyasa’s dream & inspired him to write Mahabharat. • He was in charge for classifying the four vedas, wrote the 18 Puranas and recited the great Mahabharat. • Ved Vyasa went searching for a person to write his thoughts. • At last this responsibility for this hard job was taken by Ganeshji. • It is said that Ved Vyasa is immortal - never died.

  5. INTRODUCTION Mahabharata is important part of Indian culture and civilization. Contains more than 100,000 slokas. The main message of this scripture is the victory of good over evil. Portrays virtues of love, compassion and sacrifice. Also highlights jealousy, hatred, and fraudulence. Has ideal characters like Bhishma, Yudhishthira, and Vidur for whom dutifulness was above all. Also has evil characters like Duryodhana and Shakuni who do not respect elders, parents and too materialistic. The great war of Mahabharata was the result of wicked actions of Duryodhana and Shakuni. Source of BHAGWAT GITA - Sermon by Lord Krishna

  6. MAHABHARATHA – I • King Shanthanu was the founder of KURU Dynasty. He ruled a large kingdom whose capital was Hastinapur. • He married river GANGA when she was in her human form and had a son called Devavratha. • Soon Ganga left to eternal world leaving her son with Shanthanu. • Later King Shanthanu married Sathyavathi. • Devavratha promised Sathyavathi’s dad he would not marry or become the king after Shanthanu and Sathyavathi’s son would be the heir to the throne. • Because of this promise Devavratha came to be known as Bhishma – ONE OF FIRM VOW. • Sathyavathi had 2 sons - Chithrangada & Vichithravirya. • Chithrangada became the king but soon died in a war. • Vichithravirya became the king but died in a battle before he had kids. • Sage Vyasa gave the queens Ambika and Ambalika a male child each with his yogic powers. • Queen Ambika had a blind child known as Dhritarashtra • Queen Ambalika had Pandu as the son.

  7. Since Dhritarastra was blind, Pandu became the king. Dhritarastra married Ghandari and had 100 sons. They were known as the Kauravas. His elder son’s name was DURYODHANA. Pandu married Kunti and Mathri. They had 5 sons. They are called as Padavas. 1.Yudhistra, 2.Bhima, 3. Arjuna, 4. Nakula, 5. Sahadeva. Even from their childhood Duryodhana was evil minded and he was jealous of the Pandavas. The Pandavas and the Kauravas had a Guru called Dronacharya. When the Pandavas and Kauravas became big, the elders in the family decided to divide the kingdom into two halves. One half for the Pandavas and the other half for the Kauravas.

  8. MAHABHARATHA-II • Duryodhana wanted to steal the kingdom from the Pandavas. • He invited them to his palace and tricked them into betting their share of kingdom in a game of dice and made them lose their kingdom. • Since they lost everything the Pandavas had to live 12 years in the forest and for 1 more year they had to conceal their identity. • The Pandavas used the twelve years in the forest to meditate upon gods to get divine weapons. Especially Arjuna, he got lots of Divine arrows. • They successfully finished their 13 years of punishment and returned to Hastinapur to get their share of the kingdom.

  9. Lord Krishna, the friend of Pandavas went to Dhritarashtra as a messenger to ask for the Pandava’s share. • But Duryodhana refused to give the Pandavas their share. • So, the Pandavas were left with no choice but fight for their share. • The great war was declared. It took place in Kurukshethra. • One side was Pandava brothers supported by Lord Krishna. • Other side was the great army of Kauravas led by Great warriors like Bhishma. • When Arjuna saw all his cousins , uncles and grandfather on the enemy side he refused to fight against them. • It is then Lord Krishna preached him about KARMAYOGA – which is part of our Sacred Shrimad BAGAWATH GITA. • It was one of the greatest and horrible wars in Indian history fought for 18 days. • In the end The Pandavas won the war.
