  2. Exercise 1 BEFORE YOU WATCH What is the reputation of tradesmen, such as builders, plumbers, handymen In our country? Have you heard some stories from your parents or friends? Share your experiences. If you are able to earn money by manual labour, what trade would you do and why? Have you ever tried it? Connect these professions: PLUMBER, ELECTRICIAN, CARPENTER, BUILDER to the following words: TAP, SOCKET, BEAM, BRICK, WATER PIPE, MORTAR, WIRE, SEWAGE, SWITCH, NAIL, CONCRETE, FLOOR BOARD. Would you use an Internet site to find a person who could do manual labour? Why or why not? What are some of the advantages of Internet networking to assist builders and clients to find each other? Do you trust Internet testimonials to be accurate? Do you have any experience of misleading recommendations you found on the Internet?

WHILE YOU WATCH Exercise2 Listen to thespeaker and answerthefollowing: • What does the man say about the builders in the Czech Republic today? • What are the two ways that his company earns money? • What are the biggest costs of running his business? • What does a builder need in order to be listed in the database of the Internet portal? • What is the speaker’s opinion about the websites of most construction companies? • Why does he think that his websites are more successful?

  6. Exercise5 ROLE PLAY 1. RESEARCH: On the Internet, take a look at the company’s website at http://www.nejremeslnici.cz/ Examine some of the references, and the demands. Look at the layout, graphics, and the categories of service. What are the FREEMIUM and CONVERSION RATE fees and how do they work? What is your assessment of the site? Who does the site appeal to? Who are its main customers and business clients? Is it user-friendly? Would you use it? Would you recommend it to a friend? Are there any categories that you think are missing from these: joinery and carpentryhourly husbandapartmentrenovation,painter,painting,flooring,bathroom, kitchen,insulation,electrical,masonry,tile 2. ROLEPLAY: Create a skit between a customer and a tradesman from one of the categories above. Create a situation, a location, and an interaction about a possible problem that occurred during the work. Try to consider what are some feasible problems and exaggerate them for humor’s sake.

  7. Exercise5 ROLE PLAY • In groups of two, ROLE PLAY that you are one of the tradesmen who works in one of the categories listed in the company’s website. Select one of the demands from the website that your trades person could possibly answer. You want to inquire into your working conditions so that they will be satisfactory with adequate time to finish the job. Consider what you would have to do to ensure a successful relationship wiitha client. What kinds of questions do you need to ask the client? What kind of contract do you need to develop to ensure your labor is fairly compensated, paid on time and you are protected against damages or losses on the job? Brainstorm a list of possible questions and desired answers. Then ROLE PLAY a phone conversation between the tradesperson and the client about their project.
