PURPOSE OF CLOSE ORDER DRILL • * MOVE THE UNIT FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER. • * PROVIDE SIMPLE FORMATIONS FROM WHICH COMBAT FORMATIONSMAY BE READILY ASSUMED. • * TEACH DISSIPLINE BY INSTILLING HABBITS OF PRECISION AND AUTOMATIC RESPONSE TO ORDERS. • * INCREASE THE CONFIDENCE OF JUNIOR NCO’S. • * THE OPPORTUNITY TO HANDLE INDIVIDUAL WEAPONS.

DRILL TERMS • ELEMENT: INDIVIDUAL, SQUAD, PLATOON , COMPANY OR LARGER. • FORMATION: AN ARRANGEMENT OF ELEMENTS ON LINE, IN COLUMN. • LINE: THE ELEMENTS ARE STANDING ABREAST AND THE SQUADS ARE ONE BEHIND THE OTHER . • RANK: A LINE OF MARINES OR VEHICLES PLACED SIDE BY SIDE . • COLUMN: A FORMATION IS PLACED ONE BEHIND THE OTHER, AND THE SQUADS ARE ABREAST.

FILE: SINGLE COLUMN OF MARINES. • FLANK: RIGHT OR LEFT EXTREMITY EITHER ON LINE OR IN COLUMN. • DEPTH: THE DEPTH OF A MAN IS CONSIDERED TO BE 12 INCHES. • FRONT: THE FRONT OF A UNIT, OR A SINGLE MARINE IS CONSIDERED TO BE 22 INCHES. • DISTANCE: 40 INCHES BACK TO CHEST. • INTERVAL: NORMAL & CLOSE
