  1. Our "Turkish First Names, Personal Names, Given Names" Dictionary-- an

  2. update

  3. According to our CPanel Website Statistical Reports, LPT site visitors

  4. continue to show

  5. interest in our recent blog on "Turkish Personal-names, Baby-names,

  6. and Surnames,"

  7. seen at:

  8. http://www.practicalturkish.com/personal-names--006-06-16.htmlhttp://www.practicalturkish.com/personal-names--006-06-16.html

  9. And it encourages us to remind said-visitors to also visit (or

  10. revisit) our 'Plain English

  11. Dictionary of Turkish First Names, Personal Names, Given Names' page,

  12. found at:

  13. http://www.practicalturkish.com/turkish-names-in-plain-english.htmlhttp://www.practicalturkish.com/turkish-names-in-plain-english.html

  14. We still make additions and revisions to the 'First Names' page --

  15. though these days, we

  16. confess, it's mostly when we receive a specific site-visitor request.

  17. Still...the most recent

  18. example of such a request came to us just yesterday -- when we

  19. received a message

  20. from Kezban E. that said:

  21. "I have searched in vain for the meaning of 'Kezban' I

  22. was named after my Turkish grandmother and am called Keziban. If you

  23. can be of assistance I would greatly appreciate it. (signed) Keziban"

  24. Luckily, Keziban Hanim's request didn't take long to research -- and

  25. we were able to

  26. provide her an answer (that we'll use, a little later today, to

  27. update our Names page) --

  28. which we hope satisfied her immediate curiosity. Here is what we said

  29. (fleshed out a

  30. little in case you're interested in the reference sources we used this

  31. time around):

  32. "Dear Kezban/Keziban,

  33. We found a couple of pertinent reference books in our library -- that

  34. help answer your

  35. question.

  36. In "Cocuk isimleri Sozlugu" by Metin Celal (Papirus Yayinlari,

  37. February 1996 -- ISBN:

  38. 975-7432-71-7) we found that:

  39. Kezban means:

  40. 1) someone who manages (or administers) a place (or an activity)

  41. 2) someone who is connected to home and husband

  42. And in by Kemal Zeki Gençosman's "Turk Isimleri Sozlugu" (which we

  43. acquired as a

  44. paperback book supplement to Tempo Magazine a few years back) we found

  45. that:

  46. 'Kezban' is derived from 'Kedbanu', which is of Persian origin (i.e..

  47. Kezban is the

  48. Turkified version of Kedbanu).

  49. And it originally meant:

  50. 1) a female majordomo, butler
