  1. N a t i o n a l F i s h i n g i n S c h o o l s P r o g r a m National Fishing in Schools Program Key Benefits and Outcomes

  2. N a t i o n a l F i s h i n g i n S c h o o l s P r o g r a m NFSP is modeled after the highly successful National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP).

  3. N a t i o n a l F i s h i n g i n S c h o o l s P r o g r a m Archery participation is higher in states where NASP is implemented than in states where it is not. If fully funded, there is no reason to doubt that NFSP can be as successful as NASP.

  4. N a t i o n a l F i s h i n g i n S c h o o l s P r o g r a m Wildlife professionals have worked to bring to classrooms the message of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, despite continued resistance from schools and administrators. NFSP helps break down this barrier.

  5. N a t i o n a l F i s h i n g i n S c h o o l s P r o g r a m • TWO KEY FINDINGS: “The majority of participants (89%) come from a hunting, fishing, and/or shooting family.” “The majority of participants have participated in hunting, fishing, and/or shooting activities before (80% had hunted; 99% had shot; 98% had fished).” Recent research by Responsive Management shows that most hunter and angler recruitment and retention programs are really only retention programs.

  6. N a t i o n a l F i s h i n g i n S c h o o l s P r o g r a m NFSP, on the other hand, is a true recruitment program: Going into the program, more than a third (39%) of students said they do not fish at all, meaning that NFSP is reaching students who have never had experience casting a line.

  7. N a t i o n a l F i s h i n g i n S c h o o l s P r o g r a m Two separate program evaluations provide evidence that NFSP works.

  9. N a t i o n a l F i s h i n g i n S c h o o l s P r o g r a m NFSP = results. • Students fish more after the NSFP: A majority of NFSP students (65%) went fishing after finishing since the program; 31% said they fished more after the program. • Students like NFSP: Almost all NFSP students (97%) said they liked the program, with most (64%) saying they liked it a lot. • NFSP increases interest in fishing: 77% of NFSP students said the program made them moreinterested in fishing. • NFSP improves student confidence in fishing: 61% of NFSP students said they felt more confident when fishing since finishing the program. • NFSP students continue fishing after the program: 83% said they were likely to go fishing during the following year, with most being very likely. • NFSP encourages the purchase of fishing equipment: A quarter of NFSP students (25%) obtained fishing equipment after finishing the program.

  14. N a t i o n a l F i s h i n g i n S c h o o l s P r o g r a m • “I definitely had no idea what fly fishing was before this. So, I didn’t really have any idea what to expect, but it was a lot more technique than I thought it was, but it was pretty easy to pick up on and fun to learn.” • “I really like the Fishing in the Schools Program because you get to come out and learn all kinds of fishing and just practice it and have fun with your classmates.” • “After the Fishing in Schools Program, I will do more fishing because it taught me more about fly fishing than I knew before, and I think I’ll enjoy it a lot more.” • “The most enjoyable part of the program was catching a fish.”
