  3. Rome Village to Republic • On Hills near the Tiber River • This location gave advantages • Hills for defense • Tiber was too fast for large ships to attack • Between the hills they built their forum • Like an agora • Gave people a place to meet

  4. Rome Village to Republic • Monarchy • Rome began as a monarchy • A group of wealthy citizens (oligarchy) made up the senate • They were advisors to the king • Senators and other aristocrats grew tired of the monarchy • Some kings abused their power • Formed the Republic or “public thing”
