Honey Bees are responsible for: • 1/3 of the crops that constitute the human diet. • 130 fruit, nut, vegetable, ornamental and fiber crops in the US alone. • $15 billion dollars to the US annually in improved crop yield. • hundreds of millions from Bee products such as honey, wax, pollen, royal jelly and venom.

  3. Without the Honey Bee: • 1/3 of the crops we eat would be eliminated • The loss of Honey Bees would also affect crops used to feed livestock industries such a beef, pork, dairy products and others • Thousands of other animal species would become extinct. • worldwide famine • more immediate threat to human existence then Global Warming

Honey bee health has been declining worldwide over the last 50 years. • Within the last 10 years a startling trend has emerged. • This trend has been dubbed Colony Collapse Disorder. • CCD is a very broad term used to describe the startling population loss over the last 10 years. • CCD is characterized by a sudden and extreme loss of bee populations that lead to a total collapse of the hive.

  5. Humans have contributed to all of the following causes of the decline in honey bee health • varroa mites • Pesticides • parasites • nutritional deficiencies • fungal infections • viruses • bacterial infections • diseases • suppressed immune system • pathogens • stress
