ITS and PTW ICT applications for powered-two-wheelers (PTWs) are one of the strategic field to improve motorcyclists’ safety. Applications developed within EU projects (SAFESPOT, SIM, SAFERIDER) demonstrated the potential ICT-based functionalities applied to vehicles including PTWs, whereas the issue of riding naturalistic studies is tackled in 2BESAFE project.
SAFESPOT Overview • Enhancing safety margins using cooperative systems • Vehicles, including cars, trucks and powered-two-wheelers (PTW), and road infrastructures, are source and destination of safety relevant information. • Safety information is exchanged via wireless communication. • Drivers’ awareness is extended in space and time. • PTW is participating in the Safety Distance and the Lane Change Maneuver scenarios.

SIM OVERVIEW • Identification of a safety strategy and development of the most relevant technologies in active, passive and preventive safety areas to be implemented in a vehicle prototype. • SIM developed and tested: • Active brake system and stability management by traction control and a semi-active suspension system. • Airbag and inflatable wearable device. • The overall requirements of an Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) management concept for PTW and an enhanced HMI by means of Head-Up Display (HUD), wireless communication and ergonomic handlebar controls.
SAFERIDER OVERVIEW • Development of ARAS/OBIS functionalities in order to improve safety and comfort of the rider. • 3 simulators and 8 demonstrators Europe-wide in order integrate, test and gathering users’ feedback. • Four OBIS & five ARAS functionalities are developed and evaluated:
SAFERIDER–Navigation & Weather, Traffic and Black Spot Warning • It is equipped with an internal GPS and a preloaded map to perform standard navigation and route guidance. • For the aim of this project, the visual display contains five icons that enlighten when an alarm for an incoming danger arrives. • Additional dynamic information about traffic condition and weather • Manual activation of eCall by simply touching a button on the display Warning and alarmicons Weather and traffic info eCall button Map and menus
SAFERIDER – Curve Warning • The proposed Curve Warning function is based on the concept of comparing the actual rider manoeuvre with a safe reference manoeuvre. • The safe reference manoeuvre should be a feasible manoeuvre that complies with system dynamics, trajectory constraints and safety criteria in a “human-like” riding style. • The CW module is seen as a co-pilot that computes a manoeuvre that takes into account both vehiclesdynamics and road geometry and mimic human driving style.
2BESAFE OVERVIEW • In comparison to drivers, no studies exist about on road riding behaviours and underlied motives. Studies in accidentology, biomechanism, sociology, etc. showed: • The vulnerability of the riders/PTW • The lack of conspicuity of the PTW • Open questions in risk perception, awareness and acceptance of the riders • 2BESAFE project: • Conducts a series of Naturalistic Rider Studies (NRS) and analyses the behavioural and ergonomic parameters that contribute to PTW crashes. • Study natural riding situations, including near-misses ones • Designs and implements methods and tools for assessing and evaluating PTW rider behaviour and interaction between PTW riders and other road users.
WATCH-OVER Sensor and communication technologies cooperate to detect vulnerable road users, motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, to prevent accidents.
