  21. PRINCE OF PEACE

  22. Psalm 119:9-16* (p. 157) 9 How can the young keep their life pure? By doing what your word demands! 10 I seek you with my heart and soul; Let me not stray from your commands.

  23. Psalm 119:9-16* (2/4) 11 Your word I’ve hidden in my heart To keep me from offending you. 12 Praise be to you, O LORD my God; Teach me your statutes firm and true.

  24. Psalm 119:9-16* (3/4) 13 Each law proceeding from your mouth I gladly with my lips have told. 14 I love to follow your commands, As others love to count their gold.

  25. Psalm 119:9-16* (4/4) 15 I meditate upon your ways And on your precepts I reflect. 16 I take delight in your decrees; Your word I never will neglect.

  26. Scripture Reading 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 Reader: Ron MacMaster(p. 1154)

  27. 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 • Gifts of Prophecy and Tongues •  1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.     • 2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no-one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.

  28. 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 •     3 But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. •     4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. •     5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy.

  29. 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 • He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. •     6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

  30. 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 •     7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? •     8 Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?

  31. 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 •     9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. •     10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. •     11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying…,

  32. 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 •     …I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me. •     12 So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church. •     13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.

  33. 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 •     14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. •     15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.

  34. 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 •     16 If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say Amen to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? •     17 You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified. •     18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

  35. 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 •     19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. •     20 Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. _________

  36. Psalm 119:33-40 (p. 402) 33 Teach me, O LORD, the perfect way of thy precepts divine, And to observe it to the end I shall my heart incline.

  37. Psalm 119:33-40 (2/6) 34 Give understanding unto me, so keep thy law shall I; Yea, ev’n with my whole heart I shall observe it carefully.

  38. Psalm 119:33-40 (3/6) 35 In thy law’s path make me to go; for I delight therein. 36 My heart unto thy test’monies, and not to greed, incline.

  39. Psalm 119:33-40 (4/6) 37 Turn thou away my sight and eyes from viewing vanity; And in thy good and holy way be pleased to quicken me.

  40. Psalm 119:33-40 (5/6) 38 Confirm to me thy gracious word, which I did gladly hear, Ev’n to thy servant, Lord, who is devoted to thy fear.

  41. Psalm 119:33-40 (6/6) 39 Turn thou away my feared reproach; for good thy judgments be. 40 Lo, for thy precepts I have longed; in thy truth quicken me.

  42. SERMON:A CHURCHMATURING IN UNITY1 Cor. 14(p. 1154)

  43. 1 – WHEN CHURCHES GO WRONG… • The Church in CORINTH has much to teach us (both when things go right, and when things go wrong). • Problems of ‘death’; Problems of ‘Life’! • Their three ‘problem’ areas (13:8): Prophecies; Tongues; and Knowledge… • 14:20 - Strive, in LOVE, towards GODLY MATURITY.

  44. 2 – MATURITY… INSIDE THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH • TWO basic situations (1-19; 20-25). • How do we minister to INSIDERS? (1-19) • We edify the weak and the wobbly with the WORD (1-5). • We need in our meetings TRUTH UNVEILED. (6-12 –‘Teach me’ – Ps. 119). • We need in our meetings prayer and praise that all can enjoy… (13-19).

  45. 3 – MATURITY… REACHING OUTSIDE THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH (20-25) • How do we minister to OUT-SIDERS? • 20-22 – an Old Testament example of God’s judgement working through confusion and misunderstanding. • 23-25 – So be very PLAIN. • Let God do the talking: don’t stop with mere baby food. Just the same as for Christians: Move in love towards GODLY MATURITY!

  46. Psalm 119:97-104* (p. 163) 97 O LORD, how much I love your holy law! I meditate upon it all the day. 98 It makes me wiser than my enemies, For your commandments ever with me stay.

  47. Psalm 119:97-104* (2/4) 99 I have more insight than my teachers have, For on your laws I meditate each day. 100 I’ve more discernment than the elders have, Because your righteous precepts I obey.

  48. Psalm 119:97-104* (3/4) 101 I’ve kept my feet from every evil path, That I may be obedient to your word; 102 And I have not departed from your laws, For you yourself have taught me this, O LORD.

  49. Psalm 119:97-104* (4/4) 103 How pleasing to my taste are all your words! More sweet they are than honey on my tongue. 104 From your commands I gain enlightenment; So I reject and hate each path that’s wrong.
