Describing an Effective Sports Leader There are a number of words that you may have come up with to describe effective and ineffective sports leaders. An effective sports leader may be organised, knowledgeable, honest, helpful, a good leader, enthusiastic, motivated, and a good communicator. An ineffective sports leader may be disorganised, unfair, quick to lose their temper, lacking in knowledge, or a poor communicator.
Qualities of an Effective Sports Leader As well as identifying the skills of an effective sports leader we should also look at their personal qualities. What type of people make good sports leaders? How would we describe them?
Qualities of an Effective Sports Leader Good Leadership Style Personality Motivation Confidence/Humour Appropriate Appearance
Personality Personality is what makes each person unique. Generally speaking there are two types of personality. These are known as introvert and extrovert. Introvert Introverts are described as less outgoing. These individuals do not seek excitement and would rather be clam or in quite places. Introverts are more likely to enjoy individual sports. Extrovert Extroverts are described as more outgoing. They are more likely to get bored quickly. They constantly seek stimulation and excitement. Extroverts are more likely to enjoy team sports.
Motivation People are motivated to be involved in leading sport activities for a number of different reasons. These are known as intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic This is a type of motivation that focuses on external rewards. These can include money, trophies, titles, awards and praise. These leaders are involved ins port because of the rewards they get for it. Intrinsic This is a type of motivation that focuses on the good feelings the sports leader gets from being involved in sport. These leaders are involved in sport because they enjoy it.
Confidence and Humour Confidence and Humour are two personality characteristics associated with effective sports leaders. Confidence is important because sports leaders will need to stand up in front of large groups to give instructions, lead activities and communicate to a range of abilities. Confidence will improve as the sports leader becomes more experienced and knowledgeable. Humour is important to a sports leader because it enables them to relax and enjoy their job role. Having a good sense of humour enables the sports leader to relate to their participants and build a rapport with them.
Appearance Sports leaders should dress appropriately when leading sport activity sessions. Evaluation Being an effective sports leader requires a number of different skills, qualities and responsibilities. Skills include communication, organisation of equipment, knowledge, activity structure, target setting, use of language and evaluation. Personal qualities include appearance, leadership style, personality, enthusiasm, motivation, humour and confidence. Responsibilities include professional conduct, health and safety, insurance, child protection, legal obligations, equality, rules and regulations, ethics and values.
