OVERVIEW • South Africa’s unemployment rate is estimated at 25% • 70% of the unemployed are young people • Skills Development and Training critical in maximizing employability of this population • Currently there are close to 3 million out of school and unemployed youths • Tourism identified as one of six priority areas with potential to create jobs (2011 SONA) • Successful hosting of the 2010 Soccer World Cup supports this notion

  12. What Does All This Mean? • CATHSSETA has an income of 200 million • Less than 5% of registered employers submitting WSPs/ATRs • Half of received funds paid back to employers for training purpose • Remainder pumped back into discretionary funding

  13. Some Introspection? • Close to 90 % of Industry is not submitting WSPs /ATRs. Does this equate to industry’s commitment to skills development and training? • What is industry’s contribution to the curriculum development to ensure alignment of graduates’ skills to requirements of the employers

  14. Some Introspection? Cont’d… • To address the aspect of transformation, FET Colleges must be supported and strengthened • Are we doing enough to ensure that the educators are competently trained to offer quality training to their students? If not why not? • Part of expanding on the 2010 legacy revolves around getting South Africa competing with the best in the world, why are most employers still conducting unaccredited training at such high numbers and how are we planning to improve on this?
