  1. ÊTRE To be (ou: n’être pas!)

  2. Être-To be, is an irregular verb! • Je suis-I am • Tu es- You are • Il est, Elle est, On est-He/she is, One is (or a collective we/they)

  3. More! • Nous sommes-we are • Vous êtes-You (all) are • Ils sont, Elles sont-They are (m), they are (f)

  4. Note this! • Vous ~ êtes • There is “liason” or linking of sounds. So you’ll say or hear a “Z” sound between the two words.

  5. Also: • Être d’accord-to agree (to be in agreement) Ex. Je suis d’accord avec toi! I agree with you! Ex. Tu es d’accord avec moi? Do you agree with me?

  6. Tu or Vous? • Remember to use TU (You) for family and friends! • Use VOUS for being polite or using it in the plural sense. (You or Y’all)

  7. ILS or ELLES? • IL=HE • ILS= THEY (2 or more males or a mixed group of males and females) • ELLE-SHE • ELLES-THEY (2 or more females-NO males!)

  8. So try to guess what these mean! • Je suis ici! • Tu es de Paris? • Il est en classe. • Elle est là-bas! • Nous sommes en vacances • Vous êtes en ville? • Ils sont au café. • Elles sont au cinéma!

  9. GOOD JOB! • NOW MEMORIZE THIS VERB! • KNOW IT, OWN IT! • AU REVOIR!
