  3. How WHMIS Works Informed worker CHEMICAL SUPPLIER Employer will provide training Labels- MSDS

  4. WHMIS informs workers about chemicals they may use in 3 ways: • Worker Education • Workers who handle chemicals MUST complete WHMIS education program • If you are unsure about something, ask your employer!

  5. WHMIS informs workers about chemicals they may use in 3 ways: 2) Labels, in both French and English

  6. WHMIS informs workers about chemicals they may use in 3 ways: 3) Material Safety Data Sheets - Provides detailed information

  7. WHMIS Symbols Class A Compressed Gas May explode near heat or fire Handle with care by keeping away from fires; store in a safe area Ex. Aerosol spray cans

  8. WHMIS Symbols Class B Flammable and Combustible Materials May burst into flames Keep material away from heat sources and other combustible material Ex. Gasoline

  9. WHMIS Symbols Class C Oxidizing Materials May react violently or cause an explosion when it comes into contact with combustibles like gasoline Store away from combustibles Ex. Bleach

  10. WHMIS Symbols Class D, Division 1 Poisonous and infectious materials causing immediate and serious toxic effects May cause death if taken orally, or inhaled, and can be absorbed through the skin Work in a well ventilated area and wear breathing protection Ex. Cyanide

  11. WHMIS Symbols Class D, Division 2 Toxic Materials Causing Other Toxic Effects May cause death, birth defects, cancer, or sterility Work in a well ventilated area and wear protection for hands, body, face, and eyes Ex. Lead

  12. WHMIS Symbols Class D, Division 3 Biohazardous Infectious Material May cause an infectious disease or other reaction Work in special biological areas with people who are trained in handling this material Ex. HIV (AIDS)

  13. WHMIS Symbols Class E Corrosive Materials May cause eye and skin irritation; causes burns if exposed for long periods Work in a well-ventilated area and wear protection for hands, body, face and eyes Ex. Battery Acid

  14. WHMIS Symbols Class F Dangerously Reactive Materials May cause unexpected reactions when exposed to water, electric shock, or heat Store in proper containers and handle with care Ex. Nitroglycerine (used in dynamite)
