  1. 50 Shades of GrayVisits the Media Center Building New Relationships with “THE” CCSS

  2. Chapter 1 It started the day Jennifer was alone in her media center. So very alone. She bit her bottom lip. Where was her old flame now? You know, the very attractive CBC. It spelled out what Jennifer had to do, and how she had to do it. Jennifer was having trouble getting used to not having the CBC next to her, telling her what the standards were. Now she had no guide, and the coldness made her quake. She just couldn’t be alone anymore. She had to find a new purpose. But with what?

  3. Jennifer heard about “THE” CCSS. It seemed friendly enough. In fact, CCSS was making its rounds throughout Miami-Dade, Florida, and the rest of the country. One might get the impression that CCSS was “easy”, but that was not the case. Not at all! In fact, the CCSS made it much, much harder to find the media specialists’ exact role. Jennifer thought, “How will CCSS fit in to what we do? Worse yet, how do media specialists fit in?” Jennifer had no choice, she had to study. She had to study the CCSS. Every inch of it… until she completely understood what her new role would be.

  4. First, she read the manual carefully. She even took notes, and then she highlighted the important parts. You know, the parts that would help her satisfy what was expected of her. It looked kind of like this: 4th Grade Writing: Research to Build and Present Knowledge CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.7Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.8Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; take notes and categorize information, and provide a list of sources. Hey, this looks like FINDS… something I did with the CBCs.

  5. Jennifer then took out her journal, and she wrote this down… I CAN SATISFY CCSS! It requires the same things of me that Mr. CBC demanded. Only now, the teachers that I work with really need to collaborate with me, and I with them. They can no longer deny my power. They need me because I am also their key to satisfying the CCSS. Relief and excitement filled Jennifer. She wiped the perspiration from her brow, closed her journal, met with the teachers in her school, and they began planning. Her excitement was contagious.

  7. Incorporating Databases and Information Literacy into the CCSS a.k.a. Life Without the CBCs

  8. NOW/CCSSs THEN/CBCs Lesson on Destiny one week. Lesson on the Reference Section the other week. Lesson on individual databases during following weeks. Lesson on plagiarism. Lesson on citing sources within a paper. Lesson on a works cited. Lesson on making PowerPoints, using Word, Publisher, or Video Editing. A lesson or two on FINDS. Lessons throughout the year pertaining to collaboration with teachers on grade level topics. Working throughout the year on a FINDS project. One per class… based on a teacher requested topic. Databases and other information literacy woven with in many lessons throughout the school year. The culmination of the year is a project. One per class or one per student depending on the grade level.

  10. LESSON 1: After collaborating with teacher, decide on a topic of research. With the students: Learn vocabulary. Ask questions. Organize. Consider your output.

  11. LESSON 2: DESTINY based on research question. Finding books on topic. LESSON 3: Using the Reference Section finding resources on topic. LESSON 4-6: Using http://virtuallibrary.dadeschools.net to use the databases on topic.

  13. LESSON 7: Note taking LESSON 8: Paraphrasing and using quotes. LESSON 9 & 10: Citations within and in Works Cited. GOING BACK TO THE DATABASES AND SHOWING STUDENTS THE MLA!

  14. LESSON 11-12: Using WORD, PUBLISHER, or POWERPOINT, HOLLYWOOD PINACLE STUDIO depending on the grade.

  15. LESSON 13: Reading/viewing. Constructive criticism. Monologue/Dialogue. Celebrating!
