  2. The Main Thing Provide a safe and efficient transportation system to transport students • KCS transports over 20,000 students • Drivers drive over 3,000,000 miles annually • The average driver drives approximately 20,000 miles annually • KCS maintains an excellent safety record

  3. Safety Safety at the bus stop • Loading and unloading • Follow the procedures that are required by Federal regulations • Slow down the process • Pay attention to the details • Pay close attention to the younger students Consequences • 1 death and 4 serious injuries last year

  4. Injuries • 5 year old in Lincoln County • Elderly lady ran the red signal bus lights • Guardian not at the stop • Driver released the child from the berm of the road • 6 year old dragging victim • Bus stop off the main road • Driver on the intercom as students loading • 1st of 2 students reached the top step • Driver shuts door on 2nd pinning child’s foot • Driver pulls away slowly dragging child • Student not seriously injured but tramatized

Injuries • 5 year old critically injured • Driver pulls off the road for stop • Students already at the front of bus as door is opened • Driver does not apply park brake • Girl sees mother and gets off at wrong stop • Driver does not hear child say “I see my mommy” twice with the second being at his side • Child is hit by a passing truck

Injuries • 5 year old ran over by a school bus • Driver pull off road for bus stop • Child gets off bus • She does not see her mother and walks to rear of bus looking for father • She returns to the front of bus and walks in front of bus and is knocked down by the bus and ran over • Rear tires pull the hair out of child’s scalp but misses head. • Child is injured but not seriously

Safety Pre and post trip inspections • Team effort to safely maintain the bus • Large majority of bus defects should have been caught during driver inspection • Most defects affect driving and braking equipment • Assure against possible terrorist activity Consequences • Serious accident • Bus is out-of-service longer • Pipe bomb caused a shut down of the road and rail for 3 hours
