Solving Equations and Patterns in Division: Oscar's Earnings Calculation

This lesson focuses on identifying equations and solving them, alongside exploring patterns in division. Students will engage with sample equations to find missing numbers, such as "163 = ___ + 49" and "354 ÷ ____ = 6". They will also analyze a scenario involving Oscar, who charges $6 per hour for babysitting, to explore his earnings over various hours worked, while predicting future earnings. Additionally, the lesson includes homework for grades 5 and 6, urging students to reinforce their understanding of equations and patterns in real-life contexts.

  1. Patterns in Division

  2. Solving Equations An equation is a statement that two things are equal. Which one of these are equations?

  3. Find the missing number 163= ___ +49 ____ ÷ 6 = 144 ___ - 3 = 10 – 4 354 ÷ ____ = 6

  4. Oscar baby-sits to make money. Oscar charges $6 for each hour he works. How much does Oscar earn when he works 2 hours? 3 hours? 4 hours? 5 hours? Show your results in a table.

  5. What patterns do you see in the table? Write rules for these patterns. Use the patterns to predict how much Oscar will earn working 21 hours. Oscar saves all the money he earns. He needs $250 to buy a mountain bike. How many hours does Oscar need to work?
