  5. Around the world… • Culture region: an area in which people have many shared culture traits • A single country can be a single culture region • Japan has one dominant culture • Sometimes a single country can have multiple culture regions • The U.S. has many regions • Think about how Oklahoma is different from California…

  6. Ethnic group: a human population that shares a common culture or ancestry • Some countries are home to many ethnic groups • Ex. Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa • Country borders sometimes divide culture regions and separate members of an ethnic group. (Kurdish People)

  7. Acculturation: whenever an individual or group adopts some of the traits of another culture (European Immigrants To U.S.) • Assimilation: when immigrant groups adopt all of the features of their new culture

  8. Diffusion • This happens when an idea spreads from one person or group to another and is adopted • For example, jazz music began in New Orleans and spread to other parts of the U.S. and the world.

  9. Globalization • Connections around the world increase and cultures become more alike • Today, it has its roots in American culture • Slang • Music/Movies • Business

  10. Cultural divergence • When cultures try to maintain their uniqueness • Sometimes, this leads to fundamentalism, where people reject the spread of modern culture and hold fast to traditional habits • But not always!!! • Ethnic celebrations and festivals allow people to celebrate their unique history, identity and way of life.
