1. Murray et al : Medical Microbiology (6th ed., 2009, Mosby) 2. Jawetz et al : Medical Microbiology (24th ed., 2007, Lange)

  6. 최초의세균 관찰 : Microscope의발명 (1674)-better magnifying lens • - Anton VanLeeuwenhoek • - 미생물의존재 확인 :animalcules The first to provide accurate descriptions of protozoa, fungi, and bacteria.

  7. Theory of spontaneous generation • Francesco Redi Redi's experiment proving maggots are not spontaneously produced in rotten meat. • 질병의 미생물설 • : LouisPasteur - germtheory, pasteurization Pasteur's swan-neck flask experiment The germ theory of disease : microorganisms (air) are the causes of infectious disease.

  8. - Robert Koch : 순수분리배양법 • Koch's postulates : relate a specific microorganism to a specific disease. • Microorganisms are observed in a sick animal • cultivated in the lab. • The organisms are injected into a healthy animal, • the animal develops the disease. • The organisms are observed in the sick animal • reisolated in the lab. Koch : 코흐의 4대원칙 o Koch’s postulates - observed the anthrax-causing bacteria 1. The microorganism should be found in all case of the disease in question, and its distribution in the body should be in accordance with the lesions observed 2. The microorganism should be grown in pure culture in vitro (or outside the body of the host) for several generations 3. When such a pure culture is inoculated into susceptible animal species, the typical disease must result. 4. The microorganism must again be isolated from the lesions of such experimentally produced disease

  9. The Microbial World • Viruses • Bacteria • Fungi • Parasites • Infectious diseases • Exogenous infection • Endogenous infection • Physiology and structure • Pathogenesis and Immunity • Epidemiology • Clinical diseases • Laboratory diagnosis • Treatment, prevention, and control • 감염의 위험을 최소화 (소독, 멸균) • 진단 • - 안전하고 효율적인 치료

  10. - Infectious diseases • - 전염병 : AIDS, SARS, Avian influenza • Bioterror • - 소독, 멸균법의 개발 • 백신, 항생제 개발 • Biotechnology • Viruses • Bacteria • Fungi • Parasites - Emerging and reemerging infectious disease
