  4. Biography • The story of a person’s life written by another person

  5. Biography/Autobiography • In Greek, the word bios means “life” and graphia means “writing.” • A biography is a “written life.” • “Auto” means self in Greek. • An autobiography is the written story of the writer’s own life.

  6. Biography • We look for factual accuracy and objectivity. • Biographies are based on study and research. • Writing objectively requires an unbiased account of the subject.

  8. So, • Was “Eleanor Roosevelt” a biography or autobiography? How do you know?

  9. Autobiography • The story of a person’s life written by that person. • We look for subjectivity. • We look for the author to get personal.

  10. Nonfiction Subjective details can be verified only by reference to the reader's state of mind (feelings, opinions) Objective details can be verified. They are factual.

  11. Personal Essay • A short work of nonfiction that expresses the writer’s thoughts and feelings on a subject.

  12. Personal Narrative • An account of an incident from a writer’s life.

  13. Anecdote • Brief (short) stories of real life events

  14. Chronological Order • A way of organizing information by presenting events in the order they happened.

  15. melancholy • adj. sad; gloomy; depressed. • ~ In the Middle Ages, people thought sadness resulted from a body fluid called bile, and they used the Greek words for black bile to label this mood. • Rainy days make me melancholy, although I know there is no reason to feel sad.
