  7. 1. The Life and Dignity of the Human Person • Helping others live life to the fullest in the physical, social, mental and spiritual sense • In Canada, we do this by making health care available to all.

  8. 2. Participation – A call to family and community • All people have the right and responsibility to participate in education, politics, culture, religion, economy, etc. • Family is society’s basic building block – where we get love

  9. 3. Rights and Responsibilities • Rights and conditions of things a person needs to be fully what God created them to be • Survival Rights: Food, shelter, and basic health care • Thrival Rights: education, employment, a safe environment

  10. 4. Option for Poor and Vulnerable • Needs of poor first • Help by being partners with the poor and take on their problems, not take advantage of them • Help to change the injustice that makes them poor

Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers • Work promotes dignity by providing things families need to live • As images of God, we are made to be creative to bring goodness, order and contribute to common good • Things necessary for dignified work are rights of workers (eg. Fair pay, safe workplace, form unions, etc.)

  12. 6. Solidarity • Based on Spirit of Friendship • We are all part of the same human family regardless of divisions

  13. 7. Care for God’s Creation • Based on Genesis (creation story) • World of interdependence – people, animals, elements • Care for Earth because it is God’s creation • Beauty of Earth reveals the nature of God to us

The Church in the World (page 44-45 in your textbook) Read “What is Catholic Social Teaching?” and answer the following questions in your Journal: • What is Catholic Social Teaching? • What is the mission that Jesus passed on to the Apostles and to us? • How does the Church describe its mission? • Why does the Church need special teaching to guide action for justice? • In your opinion, who are the most influential ‘teachers’ of society in the world today? What message do they bring to the world? (This can be anyone that you can think of. I might not have ever heard of them, so make sure you describe them to be – what they do, what they say, etc.)
