The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34 • A Summary… • God has laid before Job an “unanswerable argument” Ù Job was left speechless!! • In cataloging His creation, God had sought to convince Job of the Divine wisdom necessary not just to create it, but to also maintain daily control over and provision for it

The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 Job’s Response To Jehovah 42:1-6 • A “broken Job” replies to what Divine wisdom has forcefully put before him • He admits that God cannot be “thwarted” and He is indeed in control of all that exists v. 2 • With this statement, Job also confesses that behind all of God’s actions there is Divine design and principled purpose

Eph 1:18 • He thought he knew enough about God v. 5 • But now, he understands…only because God had brought him to and through this ordeal

The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 Job’s Response To Jehovah 42:1-6 • A “broken Job” replies to what Divine wisdom has forcefully put before him • “Now mine eye seeth Thee” • Adversity draws us closer to God if we let it • Adversity helps prioritize life if we put things in proper perspective cp. 2 Cor 12:7-10

The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 Job’s Response To Jehovah 42:1-6 • A “broken Job” replies to what Divine wisdom has forcefully put before him • Job retracts his words, and “repents” of his statements that mischaracterized God v. 6 • Notice what he doesn’tdoÙ he doesn’t say, “Yes, I misspoke…but my “3 friends” aren’t innocent, either!”

The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 Job’s Response To Jehovah 42:1-6 • A “broken Job” replies to what Divine wisdom has forcefully put before him • Job had lost all his material possessions • Job had lost his health, was in painful agony • Job had suffered the emotional trauma of rejection by others, especially his family

The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 Job’s Response To Jehovah 42:1-6 • A “broken Job” replies to what Divine wisdom has forcefully put before him • Job had suffered the mocking and ridicule of others who judged him in the worst way • Yet, through all this, he held steadfastly on to his faith in God…he never lost his fellowship with God

  16. The Epilogue Job 42:7-17 “The Friends” Rebuked vv. 7-9 • Jehovah rebukes “the 3 friends” because they had “not spoken of Him what was right as Job had” v. 7 • They had cast God in an unfavorable light, saying He was punishing Job for “obvious” sins…a false accusation against God

The Epilogue Job 42:7-17 “The Friends” Rebuked vv. 7-9 • Jehovah instructs “the 3 friends” to go to Job with sacrifices vv. 8-9 • Job would be acting as their priest so that God would not punish them for their “folly” • Ironically, Eliphaz’s last words to Job were coming true cp. 22:30 • How confused “the friends” must have been!!

The Epilogue Job 42:7-17 Job’s Fortunes Restored vv. 10-17 • Jehovah blessed Job after his sufferings, increasing his prosperity two-fold vv. 10-15 • Wealth, possessions, children, friends • Jehovah allowed him to live a long life after his sufferings, experiencing the joy of seeing his grandchildren vv. 16-17

  19. The Epilogue Job 42:7-17 Some Closing Comments… • We have no textual evidence that Job ever learned the reason behind all his sufferings • The Book of Job helps the student with the struggles he may have in trying to harmonize his sufferings in life with his view of a good and gracious God

The Epilogue Job 42:7-17 Some Closing Comments… • Lessons learned from the Book of Job – • Satan will test me…try to make me sin • I must not question God because I suffer • Suffering does not only happen because I am guilty of some sin • Faith tested will make me stronger…help me “see God” in a better way
