Odorization

The guidelines for odorization of combustible gas in distribution and transmission lines mandate that all combustible gas must contain a detectable natural odorant or be odorized at all times. Detection levels must allow people with a normal sense of smell to detect gas at one-fifth of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL). Specific provisions exist for transmission lines in certain classifications and prior unodorized gas facilities. Operators are required to conduct periodic sampling to ensure proper odorant concentration and compliance with safety regulations.

  2. Odorization of Gas • Combustible gas in a distribution line must; • Contain a natural odorant, or • Be odorized At ALL Times

  3. Detection Level • Must be detectable at one-fifth of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) by a person with a NORMAL sense of smell.

  4. Detection Level • Must know what the LEL of your particular gas stream is!

  5. Transmission Lines • As of January 1, 1977, transmission lines in class 3 and 4 areas must be odorized; unless

  6. 2 miles Class 3 14 miles 4 miles 20 miles (total) Flow Direction Transmission Lines • At least 50% of the length of the line DOWNSTREAM from that location is class 1 or 2. Begin here 192.625(b)(1)

  7. Transmission Lines • Exceptions continued; • Transports gas to any of the following facilities which received unodorized gas prior to May 5, 1975: • Underground storage field; • Gas processing plant 192.625(b)(2)(i)(ii)

  8. Transmission Lines • Exceptions continued; • Transports gas to any of the following facilities which received unodorized gas prior to May 5, 1975: • Gas dehydration plant; or • Industrial plants where; • Odorant causes unfit product; or 192.625(b)(2)(iii)(iv)(A)

  9. Transmission Lines • Exceptions continued; • Transports gas to any of the following facilities which received unodorized gas prior to May 5, 1975: • Industrial plant where; • Reduces activity of a catalyst • Reduces chemical reaction 192.625(b)(2)(iv)(B)(C)

  10. LDC Class 3 Transmission Lines • Exceptions continued; • At least 50% of a lateral line serving a distribution center is in class 1 or 2 area. (Any 50%) 192.625(b)(3)

  11. The Odorant • The odorant may not be deleterious to people, materials, or pipe. • Combustion products may not be toxic to breathe or corrosive to materials exposed to combustion products. 192.625(c)(1)(2)

  12. Other Considerations • Which blend to use for the desired results; • Soil absorption • Soil types • Reaction with gas stream composition • Heavy ends present can cause masking

  13. Odorizing Equipment • Must introduce the odorant without wide variations. 192.625(e)

  14. Sampling • Each Operator shall conduct Periodic sampling of combustible gases to assure proper concentration. • What’s periodic? • Sample where? 192.625(f)

  15. Sampling • Master meter operators may achieve this by; • Obtain written verification from supplier that the concentration complies; AND • Conduct "sniff" tests at the extremities. 192.625(f)

  16. Equipment • Need equipment to determine this quantitative measurement. • Can perform “Room Tests” • “Sniff tests” and tracking leakcomplaints are good supplements.
