  1. Support Facilities Lower Enclosure Support & Operations Building Pier (will be included in building design) everything that doesn’t rotate

  2. Process to Date • Space requirements established and reviewed. • Prototypical (any site) floor plans developed. • 3d model developed in coordination with dome and mount models. • Plans & model revised to accommodate dome changes. • Upper floors revised, catwalk added, fixed floor ring at dome added. • Lower enclosure diameter reduced. Shop and other spaces moved to support & operations building. • Plans used to explore site space requirements. • Conceptual design used for cost estimating.

  3. Enclosure &Support BuildingSection ~105 ft. (32 m) Level 5 dome Level 4 catwalk platform lift ~46 ft. (14 m) Level 3 Level 2 Upper Coude Level 1 Lower Coude ground level (assumed) Level 0 - Basement cable wrap Depth of pier TBD

  4. Level 0 Plan Level 5 Level 4 Level 3 Level 2 Level 1 Level 0 North Elevation

  5. Level 1 Floor Plan 82 ft. (25 m) 70 ft. (21 m) ? Ground Floor

  6. Level 2 Floor Plan ? remoteexhaust? ?

  7. Level 3 Floor Plan

  8. Levels 4 & 5 Floor Plans

  9. Space Requirements (Support Building) to be expanded to cover other requirements Areas indicated are as provided in current design

  10. Space Requirements (Lower Enclosure) Total area of spaces: Support Bldg - 8,010Lower Enclosure – 11,190 Total enclosed gross sq.ft.: 10,57013,680 * * *Coude platform areas not included in facility cost estimates Space Summary (w/ corridors, vestibules stairs, walls) (1.32) ----net to gross ratio---- (1.22)

  11. East Elevation All walls and roofs of Support Bldg. and Lower Enclosure assumed to be metal panels on steel structure Minimum roof slopes for snow conditions Heat controlled panels under dome White finish assumed for all exposed surfaces ? Ground line will vary depending on site topography

  12. Structure Steel column and beam framing for all structure of Support Bldg. and Lower Enclosure Steel decking or grating for all floors Lower Enclosure floor framing cantilevered off of perimeter columns Maximum distance maintained between building and pier foundations

  13. Utilities Service Space – (elevator mach room, W.C., utility closet...) at each level Cable trays and utility runs to Control Room, Computer Room, and other support areas. Utilities to cable wraps for telescope & Coude platforms - in chases (in lower enclosure or in elev. vestibule) Special purpose mech. space (UPS, HEPA air handlers, etc. Space for duct or piping runs on both sides of platform lift Pipe & wiring chase Interior mechanical spaces and exterior equipment yard with central utility run

  14. Space & Handling Size of platform lift, hatches & doors adequate for defined maximum instrument volume. Cranes in Receiving area, Instrument Lab & on dome (elsewhere TBD) Storage & maintenance space to be augmented. (site dependent) Environment & Utilities HVAC of Coude platforms needs tight temp control and HEPA filtering Utility lines (cryogens, air, chilled water, vacuum, etc.) will be from Mech. Rms. In Support Building Close proximity of Coude Labs to Control Room & utilities isadvantageous Instrument Related Requirements

  15. Can we spread out to reduce the height of the Support Bldg? Can the Support Building be kept due north of the telescope? Is there a prevailing wind direction to consider? From which direction(s) can we access the facility? What existing indirect support facilities are available on site? Do we need a coating facility? Will others use it? How to provide public outreach? Visitor gallery necessary? How will regional cost factors affect affordability? How will environmental, regulatory, structural, material, topographical, or otherfactors shape the building? Major Site Dependent Variables

  16. Timeline to Occupancy 11/’03 Site list reduction, hopefully no more than 2. 3/’04 Contract A/E for Design Development. 5/’04 Adapt preliminary design to site(s). 6/’04 Initiate (environmental) permitting 8/’04 Review DD, Finalize requirements. 1/’05 Contract A/E for Construction Docs. 6/’05 Produce 50% set & review. 12/’05 Finish Drawings & Specs. 2/’06 Bid & Select Contractor 4/’06 Start Construction 8/’07 Complete facility Use of lower enclosure space…Improve?Eliminate? Too high?Too close? What functions could be served in a separate building?Other concerns or advice…?
