  1. Importing data with the help of BULK INSERT A really popular and trending method for import data from a local file to SQL Server is BULK INSERT. It is one of the features that is supported by the moment, in SQL Server on-premises. However, there is another brand-new feature which is only supported in SQL Server 2017 on-premises. This is one of the features that allows importing data in an Azure storage account to SQL Server on-premises with the help of BULK SQL INSERT from a stored file. In the future it will also be supported in Azure SQL versions.

  2. With the help of two examples one can learn about it all. The first one will exhibit how one can use the traditional BULK INSERT statement to Azure from a local CSV file and the second example will show us how data can be imported to SQL Server on-premises from a CSV file stored in Azure.

  3. Those who haven’t experienced the Azure world yet, this is an easy way to understand the whole thing in a step-by-step manner that can guide all until the end. This is a helpful post for those who have experience in Azure and SQL Server, but are not aware of this particular new feature. With every passing moment, Azure is witnessing growth and SQL Server is improving the features and ways it has to connect SQL Server on-premises to Azure. One powerful tool to import data is BULK INSERT since it is not only fast but it can easily be combined with T-SQL code.

  4. Only one row at a time will be inserted into the database with the help of normal insert statements. However, for those who wish to insert multiple rows into the database table, then they must use the SQL bulk insert. CSV file can be imported and all the data from the file can be insert with the help of BULK INSERT. Also, there is an added advantage of loading the data “BATCHSIZE” wise with the help of BULK INSERT.  If one wants to abort the insert process, while loading the data, they will get an error with a parameter called “MAXERRORS”. One can also mention the parameters like “FIELDTERMINATOR” that clarifies and mentions how the fields are separated. Then there is “ROWTERMINATOR” which defines the manner of how the rows are separated. In order to specify from which line, the insertion has to be started, “FIRSTROW” is used. In order to understand and learn about BULK INSERT in a better way one must download a file with a large amount of data in it and then try to load it into the SQL. The file should consist of at least 10 rows. Thereafter they must perform bulk load.
