  2. What are amphibians? Salamanders and Newts Frogs and Toads Caecilians (legless amphibians that resemble snakes)

  3. Amphibian Characteristics • Lives on land and in water • Breathes with lungs and gills • Cold-blooded • Does not have a constant body temperature • Body temperature depends on surroundings • Has moist, smooth skin (no scales, fur or hair) • Undergoes a metamorphosis (transformation)

  4. Some Things to Remember! • Always wear gloves during the dissection. • Go slowly. This decreases the chance you will destroy important organs. • Dissection tools are sharp. Be responsible. The biology lab is not a place to fool around. • If you feel ill or do not want to participate, let one of the instructors know.

  5. Scalpel Tips! • Hold the scalpel as you would a pencil • Cut with a downward motion but never push down very hard to make a cut • Watch the placement of your specimen-holding hand. Do not cut toward your holding hand.

Clean-up • Carefully place all the tools back into the dissection kit • Take out all the pins and place them on the side of the tray • Wait for an instructor to come around to dispose of your frog • Have an instructor show you how to properly take off your gloves and dispose them in a special bag • Wash your hands with soap and warm water at the back of the lab
