  2. Library Databases • No matter what university you go to, they will have basically the same research databases available. • Go to your university’s website and look for the library / database link. • Databases A-Z or by subject • Academic Search Premier • EBSCOhost • ERIC

Library Databases • Once you have selected your database • Use key words only (not “of” and “and” and “the”) for general searches • If you know the specific title of the article you are looking for, use quotes and make sure that you have typed it correctly. • “‘The Effects of Global Warming in Central America’” is much more specific than “Global Warming”

Don’t give up if you don’t find what you are looking for the first time. • Have a solid idea of what you are looking for before you begin the search • Try changing your search terms to make it broader or narrower • Ask for help if you feel stuck! The library staff are trained to assist you in such circumstances!

Internet Sites to Memorize: Research • www.google.com – The path to everything else! • wikipedia.org – Not the most accurate encyclo-pedia on record, but it is adequate. • www.pitt.edu/~dash/folktexts.html – So far, we’ve been lucky: Professor Dash has consistently updated his site. This is a website with a huge compendium of folk tales and stories that just might come in very handy for your literature, history, or composition projects. • www.lib.utexas.edu/maps – UT’s Perry-Castañeda Library has an impressive collection of maps of the world – historical, current, continental, state, and even city maps are available.

  6. Internet Sites to Memorize: Words • www.onelook.com– Results from more than a dozen free dictionaries online. Also, try dictionary.comorthesaurus.com. (If you don’t have Internet access at home, visitwordweb.infoand download their free software.) • www.diccionarios.comandwww.elmundo.es/ diccionarios–Spanish dictionaries and thesauruses. • www.jergasdehablahispana.org – For slang terms from specific Hispanic regions. • www.foreignword.com – for translations of a variety of languages. • www.lingolex.com/spanish.htm– Whether you want to learn English or Spanish, this is a good site with very useful vocabulary and grammar hints.

Internet Sites to Memorize:Research & Grammar • owl.english.purdue.edu – Links to Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab’s style guides for APA and MLA. • www.junketstudies.com/rulesofw – “The Eleven Rules of Writing,” with examples for each. • grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar – The Guide to Grammar and Writing • www.better-english.com/grammar.htm – Grammar for Business Transactions

Internet Sites to Memorize: General • www.timeanddate.com – This site might come in handy if you are looking to see what day a particular holiday will fall on this year, or to double check if it’s a leap year or not. • www.alibris.com – Alibris has new and used books for sale at brilliantly low prices. There are hundreds of websites out there now with such offerings, but this is one of the most consistently low-priced sites I’ve found. • www.eCOST.com– Computer accessories and much more for unbelievably low prices. • www.sitesforteachers.com– If you are an education major, this is a must-have site. It has more than 500 links to useful lesson plan and information websites.
