  3. Hot off the Press in 2013-14

  4. Hot off the Press: GENERAL New NHS funding: • Local Education and Training Boards (LETB) replace Strategic Health Authority (SHA). • Focused health education funding including ‘benchmark price’ to both University and Trust, who will both have to meet key performance indicators. • Trusts have greater influence on commissioning (eg: student numbers, CPD courses).

New structure of Placement Development Team (PDT): • Trusts divided into 4 regions: Somerset, North and East Devon, South and West Devon, Cornwall • Each region has a PDT comprising an Academic Lead, and a Practice lead will continue to head up the team in each Trust • Supported by an Academic team from all professions • Midwifery link lecturers remain as before and are your main point of contact

  10. 4. If you are undertaking the electronic Mentor Update in future years, click on ‘Supporting and Assessing Learning in Practice’. Remember to also update yourself on ‘Programme Documentation’ including the Midwifery Programmes Mentor Update for the year. Complete the quiz and obtain your certificate by clicking on ‘On-line Mentor Update’

Hot off the Press: MIDWIFERY New 2013 curriculum: • 55% Practice: 45% Theory • Merged modules and removal of all 10-credit modules • Reduction to 5 modules per year • Meaningful inter-professional learning • Midwifery-specific modules in year 1 • Earlier practice placement in year 1 (December) • New year 3 modules – theory related to Newborn and Infant Examination and approved module for Mentorship • New version practice e-portfolio (Pebblepad) – more individualised; increased evidence for sign-off mentors to use in assessment

New format of MAP (both curricula): • Mentor Assessment of Practice (MAP) document format modified in response to feedback. • Exactly the same wording and principles, but more user-friendly. • Merging of similar statements resulting in reduced writing for sign-off mentors. • Initials by sign-off/ designated buddy mentors. • Remember that only the sign-off mentor can confirm achievement/ non-achievement in overall comment and award grade. (Full guidelines and example of new format available as handout in addition to next screen)

New timesheets: • Reminder about youraccountability when completing timesheets, as for any documentation • Only sign for the hours you know the student has worked (ie: under your direct/ indirect supervision) • All initials/ signatures also in front of OAR • Any amendments altered as for any records (strike-through, initial, date) • Sign-off mentor verifies all entries as accurate as well as total hours worked that month

New guidance for all staff supporting Midwifery students: • Fliers have been distributed highlighting key issues for ALL staff supporting midwifery students (midwives, other registered health professionals, non-registrants eg MSW/MUA/MCA) • See following slide for details regarding: - Supervision - Records - Timesheets - Reports • Please ensure all staff working with your named student are aware of these important points.

  16. WORKSHOP DISCUSSION • Now is a good time to discuss some of these issues and any queries you may have. • Your link lecturer may also provide some scenarios to trigger further discussion.

  17. Ongoing Midwifery Aspects

September 2008 curriculum: - continues for year 2 and 3 in 13/14 • Practice placements: - improved ‘staggering’ up to Easter due to earlier year 1 placement - continue predominantly maternity – acute and community/ integrated - continue non-maternity including Gynaecology, Neonatal Unit, ITU/ ICU, Emergency Department; seek ‘ad hoc’ medical/ surgical/ mental health experiences - continue autonomous study years 1&2, 4-week elective year 3

Student midwife caseloading: - continues in both curricula - any questions? • Grading of practice: - continues in both curricula • triangulation of evidence from range of sources important • all mentor team to attend tripartite if possible • moderation by link lecturer at tripartite essential at summative point • any questions?

Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI): • University ‘Certificate of Commitment’ and Stage 1 successful • Stage 2 (final stage for University Accreditation) anticipated summer 2014 • Investigations: - A reminder to seek University support for students involved in Trust investigations (disciplinary, SoM, case review, RCA) - Faculty ‘Fitness to Practise’ process rigorously followed as required – reflects NMC procedure; various penalties depending on severity

WORKSHOP DISCUSSION:Some examples of FTP cases You may wish to discuss some of the key principles arising from the following: • Inappropriate use of social networking sites • Persistent non-attendance • Timesheet discrepancies • Complaints • Unsafe practice • Unprofessional behaviour • Breaching confidentiality • Breaching professional boundaries

Mentorship Qualifications • Increased commission, but no Midwifery-specific in 13/14 • Full taught and APEL Mentorship modules at level 6 (degree) and level 7 (masters – only eligible if hold a degree). Also ‘Confirming Proficiency in Professional Practice’ • APEL screening now done by Education Co-ordinators in the Trust. Midwife must submit on-line application. Trust must submit on-line electronic nomination. • Summer Pre-registration Mentorship preparation – most qualifying Sept 09 and 10 students have completed this; APEL now needed plus 3X sign-off episodes (TBC if running in summer 2014) • New curriculum – will ‘grow our own’ by 2016

Triennial Review • All buddy/ sign-off mentors to maintain ‘Record of Mentor/Practice Placement Educator Activity document (may also be known as ‘Mentor Passport’) • Keep record of learners supported, updates attended, sign-off episodes (if buddy), evidence from learners • Annual mentor update, 2 Midwifery students (pre-reg/ SoM/ RTMP) in 3 years to maintain status • Triennial review needed every 3 years (all sign-off mentors MUST have one this year if has been a sign-off mentor for 3 years and not had review yet)
