Main Idea Main Idea Main Idea Main Idea Main Idea Complications/Rising Action Basic Situation Climax FallingAction Resolution Essential Details Essential Details Essential Details Essential Details Essential Details Characters Whitney, Sanger Rainsford, General Zaroff, Ivan What is the greatest moment of suspense? Rainsford falls from a boat and swims to an island, where he discovers a medieval-style chateau. After winning the final battle, Rainsford spends the night in Zaroff’s bed. There is no falling action in this story. 1 2 The general returns home disappointed. When he goes to his bedroom, he finds Rainsford there. General Zaroff tells Rainsford that hunting animals no longer challenges him and that he has found a new prey, humans. What do the characters want? When Rainsford refuses to hunt humans, Zaroff forces him to be the prey. What change takes place in the protagonist? Rainsford wants to get off the island alive. Zaroff wants to hunt Raisford down. 3 At the beginning of the story, Rainsford tells Whitney that animals do not have feelings and he shows no sympathy for his prey. When the tables are turned, he suddenly has a conscience—a bit hypocritical. 4 Using all the tricks he knows, Rainsford eludes the General for three days. Main Idea Rainsord must find a way to elude the general, Ivan and the general’s hunting dogs for three days. Trapped on the third day, Rainsford jumps into the sea.
