  1. Civil Engineering What is it?

  2. Definition of Engineering • “the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgement, to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind” The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology

  3. Huh? • What do you think this means?

  4. Engineering Involves: • Problem definition and problem solving • Developing devices, processes, structures and systems • Applying knowledge of science and math • Physics, chemistry, material behavior • Integral Calculus, differential equations, statistic

  5. What is a Civil Engineer? Improves quality of life through the provision of infrastructure -Buildings, bridges and other structures Highways Dams and levees Water treatment plants, waste disposal Safety, functionality, elegance and economy of product and process

  6. Research Development Design Production and Testing Construction Operations Sales Management Consulting Teaching Roles of Civil Engineers

  7. Distance Formula

  8. Example: Find the distance between A(5,2) and B(3,12)

  9. Your turn! Find the distance between these points: C(1,4) D(3,2) Q(-4,4) R(7,-2) X(-3,-4) Y(8,5)

  10. Answers:

  11. Try this one from a graph!

  12. Answer:

  13. Our Engineering Problem! We have been hired by the great state of Nebraska to design a road that will connect Huskerville and Big Red City. Both Huskerville and Big Red City are towns right on the Platte River that during game day are very popular. Thus, we want a road that connects the two.

  14. Requirements • You want the shortest road possible, yet stay under budget. • Bridges cost $10 million/mile to build • Roads over land cost $1 million/mile to build

  15. Specifications: Huskerville is 12.35 miles to the North and 23.84 miles to the west of Big Red City

  16. For example: • If I decided to put the bridge to the point (8,0) I would have to figure these two distances then multiply them buy their costs.

  17. Bridge Calculations From (0,12.35) to (8,0) Cost = 14.71  10 = 147.10 million dollars

  18. Road Calculations • Distance from (8,0) to (23.84,0) is 23.84 - 8 = 15.84 miles Cost= 15.84  1 = 15.84 million dollars

  19. Total Cost and Distance: • Total Cost = Bridge cost + Road Cost Total Cost = 147.10 + 15.84 = $162.94 million dollars • Total Distance = 14.71 + 15.84 = 30.55 miles

  20. Conclusion: • We are under our budget. • Can we make a shorter road that costs a little more, but still under $185 million? • In teams of two, you try. There is a prize for the winner!!!
