The Lord’s Prayer – Matthew 6:9-13 • Our Father who is in heaven, • Hallowed be Your name. • Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. • Give us this day our daily bread. • And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. • And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. • For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Lead us not into temptation Thinking: - I am responsible for my behavior - I don’t want to have to confess sins again! - Lord, help me! But we need to be clear in our minds aboutthe nature of temptation.
The Nature of Temptation 1. Temptation is NOT the same as sin. 2. Temptation can lead to sin – it is our choice !!
Temptation Is Not Sin Hebrews 4:15 (NASB95) For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yetwithout sin. It is possible not to yield to temptation.
The Nature of Temptation James 1:13 (NASB95) Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. God is NOT the source of temptation.
The Life-Cycle of Temptation James 1:14–15 (NASB95) 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticedby his own lust. 15Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. We have a built-in tendency to yield to temptation.
The Nature of Temptation Romans 7:19–20 (NASB95) 19 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. We have a built-in tendency to yield to temptation.
The Nature of Temptation 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NASB95) No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. We do not “have to” yield to temptation.
The Nature of Temptation Matthew 26:41 (NASB95) (Jesus to disciples – Garden of Gethsemane) “Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” We do not “have to” yield to temptation.
One Last Thought on Temptation James 1:2–4 (NASB95) 2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. God can sovereignly use our trials/temptations. This does NOT say to seek trials.
Back to the Lord’s Prayer And do not lead us into temptation, - StatedNegatively – Lord, help me to not go there again! - Recognizes my human weakness/sin nature but deliver us from evil. - Stated Positively – Lord, protect me - Recognizes Satan is a real and powerful enemy
For Yours - is the kingdom - and the power - and the glory - forever. Amen.

Yours is the glory Exodus 40:33-35 – dedication of the Tabernacle 33 He [Moses] erected the court all around the tabernacle and the altar, and hung up the veil for the gateway of the court. Thus Moses finished the work. 34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the gloryof the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the gloryof the Lord filled the tabernacle.
Yours is the glory 1 Kings 8:6,10-11 –dedication of the Temple 6Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, to the most holy place, under the wings of the cherubim…. 10 It happened that when the priests came from the holy place, the cloud filled the house of the Lord, 11 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.
