Punishing crime • Approaches to crime control: • Deterrence – discouraging criminal acts through threats of punishment • Examples: • Long prison terms • Suspension of drivers license • Works only under two conditions • Criminals know they’re likely to get caught • Punishment is severe • Justice system is slow in America • Death penalty tends to be the exception

  3. Punishing Crime • Approaches to crime control: • Retribution – having criminals pay compensation for their crimes • Can be monetary (fines) or societal payment (prison) • Must be issued by societal authority (i.e. justice system) – cannot take law into your own hands

  4. Punishing Crime • Approaches to crime control: • Incarceration – removing criminals from society (jails and prisons) • Criminals cannot harm society if they are they are not a part of society • U.S. takes a strong stance in favor of incarceration – jails and prisons are overcrowded

Punishing Crime • Approaches to crime control: • Rehabilitation – reforming criminals through resocialization • Earning a diploma or degree in prison • Psychological help • Can be difficult • Resocialization may not successful due to prison environment • Stigma of being an ex-con prevents societal acceptance • Prisoners can become institutionalized
